Overview
Dan Gronkowski is a tight end who was selected by the Detroit Lions with the 255th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Gronkowski played four seasons at Maryland. Gronkowski is 6-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs 255 pounds.
Prep Career
Gronkowski was a three-year starter at North High School in Williamsville, NY, spending his final two seasons as the team's starting quarterback. After setting receiving records a sophomore, Gronkowski moved under center and ended up setting single-season school records for completions, passing yards and touchdowns as a senior. He was recruited by Arizona, Purdue, Syracuse and Maryland. He signed with the Terrapins as part of the class of 2003, but chose to defer his enrollment to 2004.
College Career
After redshirting the 2004 season, Gronkowski moved from quarterback to tight end in 2005. In his first three seasons at the position, Gronkowski was used primarily as a blocker, catching just 10 passes combined while playing 28 games (17 starts) from 2005-2007. As a senior, Gronkowski became more of a target in the passing game. He started the first 12 games of the season for the Terrapins, finishing tied for second on the team with 29 receptions. His three touchdowns were triple his total from the previous three seasons combined, and he earned honorable mention All-ACC honors.
Personal
Gronkowski's father, Gordon, played three years as an offensive lineman at Syracuse. Dan Gronkowski is the second of five brothers. His older brother, Gordie Jr., spent three seasons as a first baseman in the Los Angeles Angels minor league system. His younger brother Chris spent two seasons as a fullback at Maryland before transferring to Arizona. His younger brother Rob, is a tight end for Arizona.
