Ten treaties were signed in just 13 months, a remarkable achievement, and one that is still exerting influence on the various populations of the Northwest today. Few people have cut as wide a swath through the history of Washington as did its first governor, Isaac Stevens, whose legacy lives to this day, and not in the least respect, through the artwork of Gustav Sohon. Some of Sohon's drawings has been included here as they provide a window through which one can view the epochal eastern Washington treaty councils of 1855.
