Video: Mastodon Talk LSD, Iron Maiden, Singing in Dave Grohl’s Bathroom

4/2/09, 3:58 pm EST

On their new prog-metal masterpiece Crack the Skye, Mastodon pen tales about a paraplegic traveling through space, Russian visionary Rasputin, wormholes and fighting with the Devil. Weird subject matter, that is, until you meet Mastodon. The group’s thunderous rhythm section, drummer-lyricist Brann Dailor and bassist Troy Sanders, recently stopped by the Rolling Stone studios to discuss scatterbrain topics like opening for Iron Maiden and Metallica, serenading Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters’ bathroom and taking copious amounts of LSD. Also, Dailor wonders aloud how ironic it is that Steppenwolf coined the phrase “heavy metal” (in “Born to Be Wild”), yet weren’t heavy metal at all. Check out all the band’s rants in the video above.

The band’s high-flying concept album originates in one very simple place: “It comes from taking too much acid,” guitarist Brent Hinds tells Rolling Stone in a feature in our current issue. “Acid is the best drug in the world. It did the most amazing things for my creative psyche, and it still is doing it for me.” Somehow, Hinds’ LSD love is the least shocking revelation in RS‘ profile of “the greatest metal band of their generation.” In just the first paragraph, Hinds threatens to kill Rolling Stone writer Brian Hiatt if he incorporates what was intended to be an off-the-record story about a female celebrity into the article. Hiatt observes Hinds is an “authentic rock & roll madman — sometimes too authentic.”

So how did Axl Rose react when Hinds stole his groupie backstage at a 2006 Guns n’ Roses concert? Find out in our explosive Mastodon profile in the Lil Wayne-fronted issue of Rolling Stone on stands now.

post from “T”—Anyone who actually thinks that LSD and such drugs have made them “better” or that there are positve benefits to such abuse, were apparently brainless before having taken a drug. Otherwise, they would not have done so. Stupid. Free speech is essential. But ask yourselves this: Rolling Stone has for decades refused feature article coverage of such longtime anti-drug messengers as KISS and Ted Nugent. Meanwhile, they have also long propped up such drug abusers of renown as the Grateful Dead, Kurt Cobain, the late Timothy Leary and so on and on and on. Get real. Get a clue. Drugs kill those who use them, and sometimes those who use them kill others. Only an idiot would take them.

you don’t know anything man, let’s all stop predending that you do. reading a bunch of books and making you hate drugs is just stupid, why don’t you get off your online blog-reading ass and live a little? I’m only posting this cuz i’m really bored at work…but seriously..,.shut the hell up.

Hey Dr. Jablome below, you better NOT be a real MD, because if you make comments like the ones that you have, about mind altering drugs, and encourage young people to use them, I will PERSONALLY make sure that your license gets pulled, I can look you up very easily, so don’t appear again on this blog, or you will face dire consequences. My remarks about Mastodon, Foo Fighters, and the rest of these garbage groups, remain the same. Dr. Kaminsky

Dr. Heywood Jablome | 4/13/2009, 9:23 pm EST

I recommend taking 2 doses of LSD everyday because i like seeing funny colors

Wally from Erie, PA | 4/11/2009, 8:25 am EST

Mastodon - you mother fuckers all suck, just like several of the bloggers have said here, I remember you when you were nothing & you still are nothing!

Finally, an intelligent Blogger on this worthless site! tahnk you for your prudent comments!
I am here only because even though I’m a Doctor, I am a Rock an as well.
Rolling Stone is a horrible publication doing us all a disservice, with the Communist & over the top liberal Views. Why do they give Hinds & Grohl& Lil Wayne & people of their ilk, so much space, to spread their pro drug messages,& mysogynist views.
I think the good citizens in cyberspace need to take a stand.
Like Nancy Reagan said -”Say NO to Drugs & Rolling Stone! Go ahead Mr.Moderator, throw me & my comments off the Blog. Go To Hell!

I have read about enough stupidity from you Bloggers as I care to. Now, I’m going to warn you 1 last time, and that is to stay away from LSD & Mind Altering Drugz. I don’t care what Moron Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters or anyone else is doing. If I find out who you are, I will report you to the Authorities. I am all for free speech, but not free drugs, so you best STOP it now, before you land up in the looney bin with your contemporaries. All this new Generation coming up wants to do, is get some tatoos, Take drugs, and have multiple sexual partners, go thank Grohl, and those other assholes for this.
Well guess what, Party Time is over, what you gonna do, when your boss asks for the random drug test, you’re up the creek motherfucker! Sorry for the foul language, but a large number of youze deserve it!

also, mastodon is incredible, I don’t think LSD had anything to do with it, a drug can’t add something that wasn’t already there.

... | 4/10/2009, 2:42 am EST

drugs will do good, drugs will do bad. Take them at your own risk, LSD can make a person go crazy, it can also be an incredibly inspiring experience. The problem is, you don’t know which end of the spectrum you will end up on until you take it. It is for sure dangerous, but it is not the scourge of society. Taking it constantly, like anything used out of moderation, will damage you. Learn what you can, then leave it behind.

Strider | 4/9/2009, 11:33 pm EST

LSD does change one forever - for the better! My first time was over 35 years ago and I’d do it again in a second if I found some available. LSD did more for my mindset than all the education I have ever had. Save yourselves and try it!

Dr.Kaminsky Old Bridge, NJ | 4/9/2009, 11:17 pm EST

WARNING -stay away from LSD at all costs, I have seen the devastation & permanent damage that it does to our young people.
Shame on Rolling Stone Magazine & these so called “Rock Stars”that our young people look up to.
If you ingest this drug, even once, you will never be the same. I have seen these scarred for life people, over & over again, and it’s very sad.
Please ignore any suggestions to use and/or experiment with this drug, as espoused by some on this Blog. I am pleading with you, for your own good. i will be sending out “Parent Alerts”, on several websites, to inform parents as to how to handle these problem children. Back in my day, I would just get an old fashioed whupping from my father, a leather belt smacked upon my ass over & over again, so I straightened out pretty quikl. Today’s young people, -you cannot tell them a dammed thing, so I am telling you all rght here and now

LSD is Great? Have you ever met anyone who has been taken it constantly. It is embarrassing listening to them. They are completely addled. It might be fun at first but you pay a price. That’s for sure.

Someguy That Dont Matter | 4/9/2009, 12:59 pm EST

“Albert Hoffman | 4/3/2009, 2:21 am EST

LSD does not make you creative. listen to mastadon’s album to for proof. ”

I agree their music is not good. BUT if you have never ‘jammed’ on an instrument while on LSD, you just cant know. LSD is like a key to your brain that literally opens up avenues and pathways you never would have otherwise. Some people actually believe that LSD was sent to us by god to point out the fuzz in society, and to save the planet. Think about it, IF you belive in god, and believe he put us here, then he would have known what we where capable of becoming, and he knew that when mankind and the planet would need it, we would be able to find LSD and use it as a tool to point out the downfalls of society. Everyone whos takin it knows what im sayin. It only takes one time, and it completely shatters what you previously thought was important in life. Getting a job and buying tv’s and houses is the american dream, it SHOULDN’T be the human dream. Some good authors to look into Terence McKenna, and Timothy Leary!!

Someguy That Dont Matter | 4/9/2009, 12:49 pm EST

Waverunner- hey im steppin up, and i agree mastodon and lil wayne are absolutly horrible. BUT hinds has got it right when he says LSD is the best drug in the world. b/c it is, there is no better mind expanding and eye opening substance out there in the world. IMHO LSD and psychedelic drugs in general are the only savior our planet has got left. In order to save the planet we need to strip away everyones love of material posessions and money. This world is fake. It doesnt matter who has the biggest T.V. on the block, thats all b.s. to keep the economy going. AND believe it or not LSD does not make your brain bleed and doesnt make you see dinosaurs. You want to know where the stereotype of people seeing dinosaurs comes from, its from the 50’s before LSD was illegal and the CIA was injecting hundreds of milligrams of LSD into people for mind control experiments. LSD is active at micrograms. An ave dose is 50-100 MICROGRAMS, they were giving people 500 MILLIGRAMS. you follow. theres 1000 micrograms to 1 milligram, you see what im saying. So the gov was literally massively overdosing people with it. And that is just a testiment to its safety. Massively overdosing someone with more than 100 times the normal dose, still doesnt kill people. im steppin off my soap box now, its time for the american people to wake up. LSD is the key!!!

Waverunner Ryan Songbird | 4/8/2009, 6:19 pm EST

yooooo, hey asshole Brent Hinds stop trippin man, and stop endorsing that shit, you & Grohl both SUCK big time.
Your music, and that of the Foos is old news man, I’m asking everyone on here for a moratorium as to buyin any more of their crappy music.
Anyone got a problem with that? -step right up, I’m watin right here on the Blog you ignorant motherfuckers, yeah I mean YOU!
Leave it to them Bastards at Rolling Stone to glorify your sad ass stories, & the same with that Little Gangsta piece of crap -Lil Wayne, look at that little creep on the cover! ugh! maybe you should all hang out together & go fuck yourself while your at it

Great songs, Awful production

Acid rules! Ask Hendrix

It’s a classic album.

yo yo yo | 4/3/2009, 7:21 pm EST

James Brown invented heavy-metal. His concept of a the bass and drums being the focus by playing simple repetitive parts with the guitar being more of a rhythm instrument — then screeching and screaming over the grooves: that’s the blue-print for hard-rock and heavy metal.

Dude Man | 4/3/2009, 4:08 pm EST

Also, Steppenwolf should have been inducted into the Hall of Fame by now, but those idiots running the hall wouldn’t know rock music if it hit them in the face.

Dude Man | 4/3/2009, 4:04 pm EST

This might seem a little controversial, but I actually feel that Steppenwolf invented heavy metal. They came before Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin and in 1968 “Born to be Wild” was incredibly heavy. Although they did put some hippie songs out( The Pusher). Listen to “Sookie Sookie”, “Jupiter’s Child”, and “Screaming Night Hog” all three underrated songs that I feel invented heavy metal.

Wizarlock | 4/3/2009, 3:50 pm EST

The material might be good, but it sounds like a deaf person engineered the new album. It’s compressed more than a man made diamond, leaving behind no trace of dynamics. I love Mastodon but honestly the new record was a disappointment.

mastodon is awful is a dick | 4/3/2009, 3:43 pm EST

you obviously don’t like music or metal. go eat some rat poison, jerk-off

Prick | 4/3/2009, 11:48 am EST

They should continue their use of LSD because their new album is amazing…Why oh why didn’t they think of it sooner? I heard that sniffing glue is great to improve on guitar solos though, maybe they were ashamed to admit they did it too…it’s a lot cooler just to say LSD :p

Mastodon is awful | 4/3/2009, 7:49 am EST

It’s a shame that LSD is being wasted on these retards

spencer | 4/3/2009, 2:57 am EST

LSD is the best drug ever, fucking fact

yeah… like anyone can steal axl’s groupie..right!

TonyClifton | 4/2/2009, 10:36 pm EST

I’m pretty certain that it was William Burroughs who coined the term “heavy metal”. And although he too wasn’t heavy metal, Burroughs was cool. Still is, actually. For a well deceased guy, anyway.

JPROV | 4/2/2009, 8:51 pm EST

I am a long time Mastodon fan (since the night I saw them open up for Dillinger Escape Plan during the Remission tour,@The Social OR,FL)and I am listening to Crack The Skye right now and I must say that these guys should not change a fucking thing.

dude | 4/2/2009, 6:49 pm EST

i think its kewl that hez actually open about his drug use. i’m not condoning it but alot of artist wouldnt dare mention it or they would deny it. LSD or no LSD, these guys are the best songwriters on the planet right now.
