Jerry Remy takes leave to recover from cancer surgery

Jerry Remy takes leave to recover from cancer surgery

Jerry RemyNESN announced Wednesday that Red Sox color commentator Jerry Remy is taking an indefinite leave of absence to fully recover from the effects of cancer surgery.

“I want to focus on completing my recovery so that I can return to work without distractions or interruptions,” said Remy, a former smoker who underwent surgery for lung cancer late last year.

Remy expected a more immediate return but suffered a setback due to an infection and subsequent case of pneumonia. He now hopes his experience serves as a cautionary tale about the adverse health effects of smoking.

“I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children,” said Remy, the president of Red Sox Nation.

Remy joined the New England Sports Network in 1988 and has teamed with play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo since 2001.

“Jerry is beloved, and on behalf of everyone in Red Sox Nation, I want him to know that he is in our thoughts,” Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said. “We will sorely miss him in the broadcast, but the most important thing is that he takes all the time he needs to recover.”

Red Sox studio analyst and Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley will join Don Orsillo in the booth during the remainder of the team’s current home stand that ends May 8. Studio analyst Dave Roberts, the former Red Sox outfielder and postseason hero, will provide color commentary during the team’s subsequent West Coast road trip that ends May 17. No decision has been made yet about who will join Orsillo in the booth beyond that date.

“As part of the NESN family, we want Jerry to concentrate on his health and getting well,” NESN president Sean McGrail said. “When he’s ready to return, his place in the booth will be waiting for him. In the meantime, we ask everyone to respect Jerry’s privacy so that he can focus fully on his recovery.”

Jerry, I wish you a the best and you are in my prayers. My Uncle is about your age and is going through the same thing. You will make it and come back strong as ever. I am a lifelong RedSox fan. 32 years old and live in Charleston, SC. My grandfather is from North End and still have family in Boston. I buy MLB Extra Innings every year just to see all the Sox games and listen to your one of a kind of analysis. I say that with complete honesty. You have an inherit ability to paint a picture for the viewers due to your long history in Fenway and suiting up for the Sox. I made it up last year for a game against KC as I try to do at leat every other year to visit family and come see the Sox. Gotta say, that RemDog stand was kickin and the Sox didn’t dissapoint. Lowell and Drew hit Grand Slams and Dice-K was on the mound. A great day for me. Remy, you embody what is good about the Red Sox and why I am proud to be a part of the Nation. Can’t wait to hear and see you soon!

We both read the article in the Sunday Globe recently and enjoyed it. Our hearts, good wishes and prayers go out to him and his family. And I also think his announcement to young kids not to smoke was great…as a former smoker…pass on our good wishes.

    To Jerry Remy,

I’ve never done this before Jerry, but I’ve missed your broadcasting the Red Sox games. You have made me laugh soooo many times and have brought the best of baseball to my home. I so remember your commemtary with Don when Manny was “rubbing” (who was it’s) head a couple of years ago. I’ve never laughed so much in my life. You make every game sound like the most important.

PLEASE GET WELL, we are all pulling for you, and with your spirit you will do wonderfully. Again I have never done this before, but you have really brought such joy to my life that I “JUST WANT TO WISH YOU WELL”. You are a survivor!!

The game of baseball will go on for years to come. While Sox games will sound different, we know that it is a temporary thing. Jerry please get well cuz America’s past-time will be different without you. If your experience helps someone stop this addictive habit, then that wiil be another victory for Red Sox Nation!!

I am a 55-year-old Stage 3A lung cancer survivor who has just celebrated my first anniversary “cancer-free”. My cancer, unlike Jerry’s, was inoperable due to metastasis (it had spread to 2 lymph nodes on the same side of the chest). I was treated with simultaneous chemotherapy and radiation (an aggressive dosage of “7,000 grey” – 35 treatments rather than the standard 25 – 30)at the Yale Cancer Center. Please let him know that there are many others just like him and that it is imperative that he concentrate on himself and his recovery. Although we sometimes try to rush back to our daily routines in an effort to get things back to “normal” it is actually one of the least productive things that we can do. We must first come to understand that “normal” has a different definition for someone who is a cancer survivor. Even when our treatments are as successful as mine was cancer will always be, for us, the other presence in the room.

I, too, am very protective of my privacy but I also know that it can be very helpful to share thoughts with someone who is going through a similar experience. Even though I was not a candidate for surgery (the preferable approach to attempt complete removal of the cancer)the result of my treatments was about the same. The upper lobe of my right lung is basically just a shriveled mass now – the bronchial tube that leads there simply deadends. I’m certain that Jerry has had the best treatment possible and has legions of family and friends to provide support. Please let him know that it is important for him to take advantage of it all. You must clear the decks as best you can so that you can concentrate on recovery. Also let him know that many cancer patients are not as lucky as we are. Some do not have adequate health insurance or a strong support network of family and friends. Some employers are not as understanding or compassionate as mine was or as NESN is. Tell him to keep a positive attitude and a good frame of mind (I can’t tell you how many times he has made me laugh over the last year). Also let him know that if he would like to communicate with someone like me he can fire off an email at any time and I will respond promptly.

Jerry, I have missed you… wondering what happened to you! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. PLEASE beat this horrible disease. My son was not so lucky… Jarid died at the age of 23 from a VERY RARE form of cancer… he threw the first pitch at the RedSox/Yankees game in May of 2003, 3 months after his diagnosis. The absolute highlight of his life!! He adored you!!

I know what your family is going through… I will keep you all in my daily prayers.

    Get well soon Remdawg,
I hope your words and unfortunate illness give me strength to quit the habbit. I joke, calling myself a hypocriticle smoker. I hate everything about smoking yet i smoke(about a pack a day). I hide it from kids, and non smoking friends. When i huddle in the designated areas i feel like a drug addict, but i guess i am. I Wish the G-MEN would make it illeagle. Anyway I wish you well and hope you can return to what you obviously love, the booth.

I live in NY and it always feels like home (originally from Lynn) to listen to you and Don call a game. You cannot imagine how frustating it is, after listening to you and Don call a game, to have to listen to the announcers of some of the other teams that the Sox play. Knowledge, skill, intelligence and a certain quality of voice make you an incomparable pair.

Thank you for all you have given to your Red Sox Nation.

    Jerry,
My prayers for a full recovery go out to you and for your family. You have been put on the prayer list at our tiny church here in The Villages, Fl that was just started 3 years ago. We are a praying church and have had many, many prayers answered. The Bible says ” You have not because you ask not…” so we are ernestly asking the Lord to heal you completely, so that you are cancer-free…. and that you will make your second mission in life, after broadcasting, to educate everyone you can possibly reach about the extreme dangers of smoking and how it can catch up to you in the form of lung cancer years later. Cancer is no respector of age, gender, profession. It can strike anyone at any time and anywhere.
Take care, my friend, You and Don are the best because of the chemistry you two have in the booth together, AND because you are very fair and respectful when talking about members of the opposing teams and their accomplishments, unlike a certain broadcast team in NYC! They are so wrapped up in themselves that they can never give credit to the opposing teams. It is all about them. But you and Don do a great job. I have enjoyed for the past 2-3 years the MBL extra innings package I receive so that I can get all the Red Sox games.
Take all the time you need, but hurry back to the booth. The games are just not the same without the duo of Rem-Dawg and Don!!
    God Bless,
    Carolyn

    Jerry,

Red Sox baseball is always the best, but we get spoiled. You just don’t realize how great Red Sox broadcasts are, until the key component is missing. The Red Sox are always on in my house, whether I am watching directly, or it is on as background while I work around the house. I have been listening to you for 20 years now. Hearing your voice, with your game sense, your humor, your extremely entertaining tangents, and the inetraction with Don, goes beyond entertainment. It is comforting, and homey. To me, as I am sure for countless others, your voice IS summer.

Take care of yourself, and get healthy. We need at least 20 more years of Remy Red Sox broadcasts.

After your quick recovery and return to health, I would encourage you to use your very public platform and hero status to educate young kids about the dangers of smoking. As the father of 17 and 15 yo teenagers, I believe that your credibility, especially among younger kids, could be enormously effective in stopping future cancers.

My prayers are with you and your family and stay strong and keep that wonderful sense of humor and know that a lot of people – gosh actually, thousands of people are sending “good” thoughts you’re way! Hi Jerry,
You are the voice of the Red Sox that we have enjoyed since you started. We love your commentary and also your banter with Orsillo. We have been concerned for quite a while and appreciate knowing what you have been going through. Put all your energy into your recovery and if you feel down, read all the comments wishing you well and complimenting your work. When you feel better and start getting restless call Eck and Orsillo and let them know what you think of their coverage. Looking forward to your return.

My husband and I have been on many flights with you in the fall and winter returning from Florida. And, actually, you and I went outside to have a “butt” at Logan while waiting for luggage a couple years ago. I am still smoking.

To tell you the truth we are so proud of you knowing you from childhood and to see what you have become, not just such a talented athlete, but what you became after your injury. You are such a great person and a wonderful family man. Your wife and children have the whole package. We are such Boston fans. Jerry, I just smoked what I hope will be my last cigarette — EVER. I’ve been toying with the idea of quitting but it’s been like, “when I get around to it”. After reading about your battle with lung cancer, I said to myself, “It’s time to get around to it!” I already have COPD, and like an idiot just kept on smokin’…At 47 I sound like the Marlboro Man’s Grandma.

Please keep plugging away at people — especially the kids — about not smoking. Sometimes they (and we adults) won’t listen to a doctor or a professional — but when it strikes someone we see as bigger than life, someone we admire greatly, then the message tends to sink in.

The broadcasts aren’t the same without you, but this Red Sox fan will wait patiently for the Rem-Dawg’s return. Every once in a while Red Sox Nation needs a reminder that while baseball is great, there are bigger things in life. Don’t hurry back — this isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon.

Blessings to you and your family. You have my prayers for a speedy and full recovery.

You are without a doubt the “BEST” baseball commentator the Red Sox have ever had. You know when to add that funny humor of yours with Don that makes the game very enjoyable to watch. The Red Sox are very lucky to have you in the booth. You will be in my thoughts and prayers for a full healthy speedy recovery. Stay “POSITIVE” the “POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING CURES ALL”.

You and Don are the absolute best in play by play, analysis and presentig baseball in a fun and entertaining manner. You and Don are relaxed and spontaneous with each other, and your comments, though sometimes sarcastic, are insightful, informative, entertaining and often hallarious. Your particular enthusiasm and love for the game and the Red Sox is missed.

You and your family are in our prayers and we trust that you will be returned to health, wholeness, and strength. We look forward to that return when ever it is appropriate.

    Dear Jerry,

Our prayers are with you and your family. We will pray every day for you to make a full recovery and look forward to your return to the booth where you belong. Eck has done a good job, but it is not the same. Please get well soon. I quit smoking 4 years ago (May 14, 2005 at 8:55 am). It was hard, but worth it. I would cough so hard that I would wake myself up at night. Not good. I decided if I did not quit, I would end up dead with no one to blame but myself. I cheated a couple of times. The last time made me so dizzy and sick to my stomach that it cured me for good. The good thing is you are in the best city in the world for medicine. People come from all over the world to get treatment here. So you will be in good hands, my friend. We Catholics believe in miracles so I will pray for God’s healing light to surround you and get you well real soon. God Bless!

    Jerry-
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I am a younger man, so I don’t remember watching you play, but I spend pretty much every evening listening to you and Don broadcast the game, and you guys are a pleasure to listen to. I feel like part of the family or group of friends that you create on the air. And your analysis is second to none. Looking forward to hearing you back on the air soon.

Jerry, since 2001, you and Don have taken this simple task of providing broadcast and color commentary of Red Sox games to another level for our Nation. When you can have as much fun as you guys have had, you have made the job look easy. Now we take our thoughts and prayers to another level for your recovery. We know that this wont be as easy but you can count on us to be with you throughout.

Dear Jerry, I am a religious nun in my late 50’s and was saddened to hear your news. I grew up loving the Yankees (favorite player besides Mickey Mantle was Joe Pepitone) and still follow my childhood team. However my convent is full of Red Sox fans and watching you in the NESN booth has almost completed converted me…in fact I am now a proud owner of a Jacoby Ellsbury t-shirt (don’t worry we still wear habits!) But my “baseball prayer” for you is to each day step up to the plate and give it all you’ve got…and you will have home run days as well as strike out days but you are part of a winning team and I have no doubt you will go to the World Series. I am a cancer survivor now for over 10 years and will believe for you…after all don’t we all believe for the Sox?! God Bless you, Sr.Teresa

As a long time sox fan, baseball and the sox have given me a outlook on cancer….take every day or every game .. savor the victory of havine a good one and don’t dwell on the no so good game cause tomorrow is a new day, a new at bat and a new chance. God Bless and we’re praying for you

Remind Don that the first game back he needs to wear the powder blue suit jacket in your honor and Lenny Clark must be

    Dear Jerry,
I’ve been asking my husband for the past 6 RedSox games.. “Where’s Remy? I hope he’s ok.” When I heard the news of your diagnosis of lung cancer, surgery and all the complications you’ve had, I was truly shocked. Hey, I like Eckersly as much as the next gal but he doesn’t make the play-by-play nearly as fun and funny and the duo of you and Don. To see the 2 of you crack up over some inside joke or something happening in the game, it’s obvious the affection you 2 have for each other. We will miss you and wish you a full and complete recovery.

Your diagnosis of lung cancer and your courage in announcing it to help serve as a lesson to kids and other trying to quit smoking was truly classy. Take care Jerry and please stay strong.

    Dear Jerry,
So much to say it’s hard to know where to begin. First, I knew something was wrong when I saw part of a program you taped for NESN during spring training. You looked so skinny, I was shocked and when I mentioned it to the family, they all thought I was crazy. Then when you started missing games I said you must have cancer and you were going back to Boston for treatments. They still weren’t buying it but were starting to be concerned. Now we know. I appreciate how hard it must have been to share this with everyone but I’m glad you did. Our family has been touched by cancer, too. My Dad died in 2006 of multiple myeloma (huge Red Sox fan and he passed that on to me and my brothers). My uncle was diagnosed with lung cancer in November and he had surgery. He also had some complications afterward but is now doing well. So you see, you are not alone. I’m sure you will be on your feet soon if you take care of yourself. Don’t worry about work, it will be there when you are ready and we will be patiently waiting for you. And I second Sue from VT comments about drinking plenty of fluids and using your spirometer (I am an RN as well). Your presence in the booth will be missed, you and Don have a terrific chemistry and honesty about everything including the Red Sox (unlike the Yankee announcers who think they walk on water even when they’re stinking up the ballpark). Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family (including your work family).

    Keep the Faith!!!

    Jerry,

My wife and I tune in to every game and enjoy so much the dimension you add to the game. You point things out that most color guys would never get. The humor between you and Don keeps us laughing. We even have our top 5 list.

My wife and I met you before a game at Fenway a couple of years ago and you were gracious enough to have your picture taken with her. It sits proudly on top of our TV in a frame and she shows you off all the time.

When we didn’t see you for a couple of series, we were concerned that something was wrong. When we heard the news yesterday, it felt like it was about someone in our family. Our prayers are with you Jerry.

BTW, you may not remember, but I was the fan that ran into you in the waiting room last fall and said briefly, “We missed you in the playoffs. Can’t wait for spring training”

Jerry, I smoked for 35 years and knew I had to quit. I took the opportunity to quit about a month before I was admitted for surgery about 1 1/2 years ago. Have not smoked since. Best of luck with your recovery!!!

Jerry….I was so sorry to hear of the health issues you have been dealing with in the off-season. My prayer for you is that you will recover completely and that your health will be fully restored and you will be feeling better than ever very very soon. You are sorely missed during the Red Sox games, but Donny O and company are doing a good job keeping the ship righted without the Captain at the helm! We’ll look forward to having you back where you belong when you are FULLY recovered.

    God Bless you Jerry,

    Ann

Wishing you a speedy recovery. My son lost his dad to lung cancer three years ago, at the age of 47 years. We know how painful it can be. Smoking does kill, we experienced once again two months ago, when my son’s grandmother (his father’s mother) died of lung cancer as well. We pray they caught it in time and that you will get well and be back as the face of Red Sox Nation soon!

Jerry, I have become a HUGE Red Sox fan because of you and Don. I just wanted to say that no matter how this turns out, you win. Hopefully you will get better, but no matter what, this experience has shown you how many people care about you! Good luck!!! Our thoughts are with you!!! Jeannie and Jon

    Jerry,
Our best wishes to you for a solid recovery and continued good health thereafter. My husband, Mark, and I miss your commentary out here in Colorado where we watch the Sox via satellite. Not to date ourselves, but you were our favorite second baseman when we were growing up in MA. We wish you all the best.

Jerry, when I was recovering from cancer treatment two years ago you, Don, Jon Lester, and scrappy Dustin Pedroia were my lifeline to a normal future life — I watched nearly every game that season — and I thank you for that. Fight, fight, fight, have hope and come back to us. We miss you.

Here’s a secret, Jerry. I love the Red Sox team, but I love you and Don and your interaction much more! Even when the game is not so good, you both make it fun. It’s not the same without you! Get well and get back!

Jerry Remy, You have been a New England Icon for many years. Please let your battle with c ancer bring more awarness to the dangers of smoking to our young people. I hope the Boston Red Soxs deside in the near future to have a Jerey Remy Day at Fenway Park to bring more awrness to all types of cancer perhaps by the Red Soxs players and fans having a PINK OUT GAME at Fen Way Park if possible during a nationally brocasted came similar to what girls college basketball has done for breast cancer. P.S. Jerry we all miss you and want you back well a greatfull nation.
