‘The Proposal’ is too predictable | 2 stars

06/18/2009 11:26 PM

Is Sandra Bullock the female Matthew McConaughey? Or is Matthew McConaughey the male Sandra Bullock? Pondering this pop-culture conundrum kept my mind occupied while watching “The Proposal.”

‘Year One’: A disaster of biblical proportions | 1 star

06/18/2009 02:54 PM

So which is worse: the recent “Land of the Lost” or today’s “Year One”? Well, these “comedies” are equally mirthless, but at least “Lost” has plenty of expensive CGI eye candy. “Year One” is so cheap, the papier mache is still wet on the walls of Sodom.

‘Lemon Tree’: Savor the bittersweet flavor | 3 stars

06/18/2009 02:45 PM

It takes courage to make a movie about the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Make it too partisan, and you’re accused of propagandizing; avoid politics, and you’re watering down a serious issue. There’s really no way to win.

‘Tulpan’ an astonishing view of a dying way of life | 3 ½ stars

06/18/2009 03:10 PM

Its plot is ridiculously simple, yet we watch “Tulpan” in open-mouthed awe because of director Sergey Dvortsevoy’s astonishing technique.

KCPT steps into the Hulu age

KCPT on Friday is launching its first full-episode video player on its Web site at www.kcpt.org. For those of you who have been watching “The Office” episodes online for years, this may not strike you as a very big deal. But tell me: Does that KMBC video player let you flip casually between Larry Moore and Jimmy Kimmel? Does KSHB permit the viewer to switch from watching car wrecks on “Action News” to train wrecks on “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here”?

Actors Theatre's 'Glengarry Glen Ross' opens next month

Actors Theatre KC will stage a testosterone-fueled, dog-eat-dog David Mamet classic this summer with some of Kansas City’s best veteran actors. John Rensenhouse will direct “Glengarry Glen Ross,” Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1984 drama about internecine warfare in a dingy Chicago real estate office. The play has received only one previous professional production in Kansas City — at the Unicorn Theatre in 1987.
