Jedi Artisan Contest

To Jedi in Living Force who are interested in becoming artisans, this is an application procedure. You, the player . . . you can consider this a contest. In the end, five heroes will be selected for training by Felanil Baaks. Heroes who have not yet completed all of the requirements for the class may still apply, with the understanding that they may not take the class until the requirements are met. If it would be impossible for a hero to meet the requirements (in particular, the fairly stringent Craft [lightsaber] requirement of 10 ranks), then the application essay should specifically address why a dispensation should be made. Be warned, though -- characters who actually meet the requirements, or who will do so by the time they take the class, will be given preference over those who do not meet the requirements. Regardless, no Living Force character will be able to take their first Jedi artisan level prior to 8th character level. Below, you will find the rules for how the class works in the Living Force campaign, and then a description of the contest itself.

The Rules in Living Force

The rules for creating a mastercraft lightsaber have been modified to work more efficiently in a Living environment. You still must pay the appropriate XP cost. However, any material cost is assumed to have been paid for by the academy on Almas. In exchange for this, however, your hero must sit out of game play for one month of real time. Pick your month wisely, because all of the Living Force events that premiere during that month will be assumed to have happened while your hero was working on his or her lightsaber. In other words, you will never be able to play the event(s) that premiered during the month your hero was creating his or her lightsaber with that character. The hero must sit out an additional month to upgrade a +1 lightsaber to +2, and another month to upgrade a +2 lightsaber to +3. Again, modules premiering during those months are ones your hero has "missed" and will never be able to play. This represents the time commitment involved in creating what is, in many ways, the ultimate work of art for a Jedi. (Note that if you want to play a different character in those modules, that's fine; the artisan is prohibited from playing the modules, but you, the player, are not.)

When a hero has sat out a module to create or upgrade a mastercraft lightsaber, the player must notify the campaign staff jediacademy@living-force.net with the name of the module(s) the hero sat out, the total plus of the lightsaber created, and anything interesting or unique (or, when it becomes relevant, any nonstandard materials that were used) about the lightsaber that the staff needs to know. Note that "interesting and unique" does not permit the inclusion of game-mechanic-affecting abilities beyond what the class would normally allow!

Following receipt of the information from the player, a certificate for the lightsaber will be mailed to them. Such lightsabers are transferable only with the approval of the Jedi Council (i.e., the Living Force directors).

The Contest

The application procedure is relatively simple and consists of providing us with two sets of information. First, we need the following information about your hero.

  • Hero Name
  • Hero Species
  • Hero Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores
  • Hero Level
  • Hero Class(es)
  • Force Feats possessed
  • Ranks (not total bonus) in Craft (lightsaber)
  • Ranks (not total bonus) in Knowledge (Jedi lore)
  • Force points possessed
  • Dark side points earned, ever (explain why they were earned and what was done about them; having had a DSP does not disqualify an applicant, since Jedi do not expect perfection -- they only expect people to learn from their mistakes)

Second, each applicant must submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words that answers all of the following questions:

  1. Why are you a Jedi?
  2. What does your lightsaber mean to you?
  3. What is the most important piece of your lightsaber?
  4. Why should you be selected for training as a Jedi artisan?

Once you have compiled this information post it on Wizards Living Force message board Jedi Artisan Contest thread. Submissions are due no later than May 31, 2003. Jae and the campaign staff will review all applications and announce those who will be allowed to take the Jedi artisan prestige class at Origins 2003, on RPGA website, the Star Wars Roleplaying Game website, and the RPGA-LivingForce Yahoo! group. In addition, all those who are chosen will be notified directly.

Good luck, and may the Force be with you!
