Asada has landed triple Axels in competition. Her sister Mai (two years older) is a figure skater as well and finished 6th at the 2006 Four Continents Championships. Asada trained on her own from January 2008 to spring 2008, monitored and supported by coaches from the Japanese Skating Federation, before going to new coach Tatiana Tarasova.
