According to new research from the Halifax, 52 per cent of Britons do not contribute to a pension. Those who do make contributions into a pension pay on average just £59 per month, but still want to retire at an average age of 58. The survey also shows that over 70 per cent of Britons overestimate the size of their annual state pension, thinking it is almost double the actual amount: £4,716.

We've heard a lot about how the 0.5 per cent cut in the UK base rate will hurt savers and particularly those who are retired. However, the Government's decision to follow the financial path trodden in the past by the Weimar Republic and Robert Mugabe and in effect print an extra £75bn could have a far more damaging long-term effect on pension pots.
