Queensland Snakes

Brown Tree Snake There are about 120 species of snake in Queensland. This site presents information about identifying them, what they eat, how they breed, their bites and venom.

Taipans presents a closer look at the world's most venomous snakes. It includes personal accounts from survivors of Taipan bite. The story of the discovery, 'loss' and rediscovery nearly a century later of the Western Taipan is told here by Jeanette Covacevich, Queensland Museum curator, who played a significant role in the rediscovery.

At the Museum looks behind the scenes at the life saving work of the Museum in collecting and studying snakes, and shows how a snake skeleton display was made.

In the South East lists the diverse range of species found in the greater Brisbane area, including the sea snakes of Moreton Bay, and the many harmless species, some of which can be found in inner Brisbane.
