Eccentrics, Inventors.. people and places
So called because it was just around the corner from the old General Post Office (later National Postal Museum, currently empty) and a favourite lunchtime haunt of postal workers, but was once a churchyard and graveyard. In 1887 GF Watts (the painter and sculptor) hit on the idea of a national memorial to heroic men and women, and for a few years plaques were erected giving a few details of a selection of little heros.
