Mel's split from her husband after seven years.

She's said to have "grown apart" from Italian actor Daniel Caltagirone.

A pal told The Sun: "It's very sad, there is no one else involved."

Mel wed Daniel in January 2001 and they have two sons, Roman, six, and Valentino Luca, who's four.

It's reported that Daniel has moved out of their north London home.

He told the paper last night: "We are still best friends and will be for the sake of the kids."

Mel's spokesman confirmed: "The couple have mutually agreed to separate.

"In the interest of their boys, they'll stay friends and will continue to be involved in their upbringing."
