About the Embassy

The Philippines opened a resident mission in Athens in 1988, forty-one years after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Greece.  In January 1995, the Chancery transferred from downtown Athens to its present location in Paleo Psychico.

The Philippine Embassy in Athens took over jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus, formerly under the Philippine Embassy in Tel-Aviv, since late 2004.  The Philippine Embassy is presently headed by Ambassador Rigoberto D. Tiglao, former Chief of Staff and former Presidential Management Staff (PMS) Head of H.E. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.  He arrived in Athens on 11 May 2006.  He presented his credentials to H.E. Karolos Papoulias, President of the Hellenic Republic, on 14 June 2006.  On 29 September 2006, Ambassador Tiglao presented his credentials as non-resident Philippine Ambassador to Cyprus to H.E. Tassos Papadopoulos, President of the Republic of Cyprus, in Nicosia.

Following is a list of Ambassadors who represented the Philippines in Greece:

1989 – 1993: Ambassador Alberto Encomienda
1993 – 1996: Ambassador Jose Fernandez
1996 – 2002: Ambassador Norberto Basilio
2002 – 2005: Ambassador Lourdes Morales

The Philippine Embassy in Athens provides consular services to approximately 30,000 Filipinos in Greece and 10,000 Filipinos in Cyprus.

The Embassy is open to the public from Mondays thru Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays and on Philippine and Greek-declared holidays.
However, to serve our kababayans who are unable to come to the Embassy during weekdays, beginning 10 December 2006, the Consular Section of the Embassy will be open every second Sunday of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
