Vega topples Triple M for first time in radio ratings

Article from: The Daily Telegraph

October 29, 2008 12:00am

IT has taken one false start, a re-launch and three years of hard slog but Vega has finally beaten another commercial radio rival.

The newest kid on Sydney's FM block has slain the 28-year-old Triple M to record its first conquest in the latest radio ratings survey.

In its worst performance in the Ms history, Vega's brekky trio of Tony Squires, Rebecca Wilson and Mikey Robins beat the unravelling Shebang - leading the way for Vega's daytime shifts to dominate its older opposition.

But that was a bottom of the table battle, with Vega's 4.5 per cent audience share from 5.30am to midnight making it ninth to Triple M's 4.4 per cent and 10th.

"We're very happy because it's a milestone for Vega and we're obviously excited," general manager Mandi Wicks told media writer Marcus Casey yesterday.

"Tony, Bec and Mikey have led the way working really hard to set up the day, and this continues a positive trend for Vega."

But Wicks was more impressed with her younger targeted station Nova, where The Merrick, Rosso and Kate Ritchie Show scored its fifth ratings rise in a row in the breakfast slot.

The team lifted from a 9.7 per cent share to 10.1 per cent, closing in on 2DayFM which dropped from 12.1 per cent to 10.6 per cent.

It was a weird survey for 2DayFM overall, falling to 17.9 per cent from 30.1 per cent in its target 18-24-year-old demographic, plunging from 11.4 per cent to 9.6 per cent overall.

"Surveys always jump around, but losing 12.2 per cent of your target audience in one survey is a worry no matter how you look at it," Wicks said of her rivals.

It was Alan Jones' first survey back from successful cancer surgery, and he again dominated breakfast with a 15.3 per cent audience share to set 2GB up for another overall win.

Yep, haven't listened to MMM since November last year - Get This' last show! I have kept true to my boycott of this stupid station and have no interest in going back. You lost me the second that last show ended! Tony, Ed and Rich were truly the best things to happen to radio and all I have now are the podcasts to listen to over and over...BRING TONY BACK!!

i agree with Mark of Sydney, I'm over the damn 80s music on Triple M. I used to listen all day at work, now I have the iPhone going until 3pm when Pete Berner gets on the air, even then i only listen to him, then turn it down when the music returns. I have called the station asking when this crap is going to end and no one seems to know!! And they do this when AC/DC release a new album! Idiots!

Triple M lost me 2 hours in to the "awesome 80's" format change. In the 5 years I have been in sydney that station seems to have changed formats at least 3 times...but this one was the end of it for me. The kiddies at Austereo need to pick a horse and run with it. Bring back the rock I say. In fact look at "the rock" in New Zealand. They are an infinantly better rock station

TRIPLE MMM SUCKS

Posted by: AK of Sydney 2:11pm October 29, 2008

I stopped listening to Triple M when they axed Get This. It's my own personal form of protest, and I'm sticking it. I liked the Shebang when it was on in the afternoon, but I wasn't going to listen to it in the morning when Merrick and Rosso were on. Love Merrick and Rosso, especially with Kate Ritchie. I stopped listening when Sami Lukis was on there - good god, she was a waste of airspace - so arrogant and full of her own self-importance!! I'm so glad to see them rising in the ratings - it's better than ever! But Question Mark - Spoonman isn't supposed to be funny, it's supposed to be talkback but FM style.

Paul Murray sucks! He should never have been put on the Shebang! Marty and Fifi are great. Why do people try to fix things that arent broken.

Tony Martin must be happy with this survey, 'Get This' kept me on the Ms most days but after it was axed it was bye bye from me. The Shebang has always been too Eastern Suburbs centric.
