Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 13, 1966):
Restored example of an 18th-century theocratic planned community, established by Moravians from Pennsylvania in 1766. The lands, plan, buildings and industries were controlled by a governing board of church officials. The city that grew up here became the commercial center of the surrounding Piedmont region of North Carolina.
