June 18: The South Korean Army Multiple Launch Rocket System fires during a military drill against a possible attack from North Korea.
SEOUL, South Korea The commander of U.S. forces in South Korea says North Korea is believed to be boosting its capabilities to stage guerrilla warfare.
Gen. Walter Sharp told a forum Tuesday that the North could use roadside bombs and other insurgency tactics alongside conventional attacks in a conflict.
A South Korean officer with the Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command confirmed Sharp's remarks on condition of anonymity, citing policy.
North Korea's 1.2 million-member military is one of the world's largest.
The U.S. has 28,500 troops in South Korea prepared to defend in the event of an attack from the North. The Koreas technically remain at war because their three-year conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, in 1953.
