Need for Government support for education

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governmental support for at least one out of every three institutions of higher education is among the suggestions made by M. Anandakrishnan, chairman, Madras Institute of Development Studies, for raising the quality of education in the country. Delivering the Prof. K.N. Panikkar saptati address under the aegis of the KCHR here on Thursday, he said adequate and predictable funding should be provided for education, especially higher education, as a percentage of the GDP, proportion of revenue expenditure and proportion of total education budget. Unconventional options such as Education Bond, Education Development Fund and Education Equity Fund should be resorted to for mobilising funds for the development of education.He said there was an urgent need to prescribe through legislation a new classification of educational institutions in three distinct categories — Government institutions, not for profit institutions by public trusts and societies and for profit institutions by individuals and families. Quality norms should be drawn up for all the three categories. - Special Correspondent

Hotel management courses

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Admissions have commenced to the courses in hotel management of KITCO which is a joint venture of the State Government and the IDBI. The classes of the courses will be held in the Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Pala and Thodupuzha centres of the Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism Studies. Those with Plus Two qualification can apply for the diploma in hotel management course and graduates for the PG diploma in hotel management course. Those with SSLC can apply for the courses in hotel operations, professional cookery and restaurant and counter service. The syllabus covers food and beverage service and production, front office management, house keeping, hospitality management, hotel accounting, tourism management and communication. The apprentice training will be given in prominent star hotels. The classes for the next batch will begin in June. The application and details can be had from the Coordinator of the Institute, near Narmada Shopping Complex at Kaudiar in Thiruvananthapuram and at the centres of the Institute in the other places. - Special Correspondent

Award for scientific papers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prakash Kumar and S. Suresh have won the best paper award in Biological Sciences at the National Conference on Electron Microscopy and the 28th annual meeting of the Electron Microscope Society of India held at the Regional Research Laboratory here in April. The former is PSO of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment and the latter is attached to the TBGRI, Palode. - Special Correspondent

Last date for receipt of applications extended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The last date for receipt of applications for admission to the five-year and three-year (day and evening) L.L.B. courses through entrance examination at the Kerala Law Academy Law College in Thiruvananthapuram has been extended up to June 3. Pandalam Sudhakaran resigns chairmanship

Entrance examination

Thiruvananthapuram: The entrance examination (ASMIC MAT) for MBA admission in Colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala will be conducted at the University College, Thiruvananthapuram, on May 21. Candidates seeking admission to management quota seats in self-financing institutions are also required to appear for this test. Students awaiting results of Bachelor's Degree can also appear for the test. Application forms can be had from the city office of Lourdes Matha College of Science and Technology, Lourdes Church, PMG on payment of Rs. 500. `Neela kurinji' protection campaign

Kozhikode: The Malabar Natural History Society (MNHS), Greens Thiruvananthapuram and Youth Hostel Association of India is organising a `Neela Kurinji' (Strobilanthus Kunthiana) protection campaign from May 21 to 24. `Neela Kurinji' blooms once in 12 years. It bloomed in 1994 and will bloom again this year. The campaign that begins at Kodaikanal will conclude in Munnar. Photo exhibitions, visits to villages in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, discussions, awareness programmes and understanding the pathetic condition of `kurinji' forests would be the main activities of the campaign, Dr. Jaffer Palot, secretary, MNHS said. Birthday celebrations

KOZHIKODE: The 95th birthday of the leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Syedna Muhammed Burhanuddin, was celebrated with different programmes here on Thursday.

The Dawoodi Bohra community in Kozhikode comprising 30 families joined their counterparts all over the world in observing the day. A special prayer meeting was held at the Bohra Mosque at South Beach. A procession was also taken out on the occasion. — Staff Reporter
