HALE TO OLYMPICS
Monday, 14 July 2008
Solomon Islands National Female Weightlifter has been awarded a 'wild card' for next month's Beijing Olympics.

Hale and few others were lucky to grab six of the 10 invitation cards awarded worldwide. This was done through Oceania Weightlifting body.

They claimed six invitational weightlifting cards to the Beijing Games, bringing the number of Pacific Island lifters in China to 14 next month.

International Weightlifting has awarded cards to Sam Pera junior of the Cook Islands, Logona Esau of Tuvalu, Tonga's Maamaloa Lolohea, Wendy Hale of Solomon Islands; David Katoatau of Kiribati, and Fiji's Josefa Vueti.

They'll compete alongside directly qualified lifters, Dika Toua from Papua New Guinea, Manuel Minginfel of the Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa's Ele Opelogue, a Nauruan team entrant yet to be selected, two Australians and two New Zealanders.

Oceania Weightlifting coach Paul Coffa is pleased with the recognition, he says most countries cannot afford to send lifters to regular international competition.

The IWF awarded 10 invitations world wide.
