CPI(ML) unity breaks down

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: The unity among three Marxist-Leninist factions brought about by the 2005 unity conference held at Vijayawada seems to have collapsed as the central committee has sacked the Kerala leadership, which has, in turn, expelled the new State functionaries installed by the central committee.

Recently the Kerala leaders—K.N. Ramachandran, all-India secretary; P.J. James, Kerala secretary; and Sivaraman, central committee member—were expelled from the party by the central committee of the CPI(ML) through a press statement for ‘anti-party activities.’ A. Bindu of Pathanamthitta was appointed as the State secretary. However, a month back, the Kerala leadership had expelled Ms. Bindu and others for anti-party activities.

The expulsions are said to be the result of ideological differences within the party as well as the one-upmanship of certain party leaders. The three factions—the Communist Organisation of India (Marxist-Leninist) led by Kanu Sanyal of West Bengal; the CPI(ML) Unity Initiative led by Viswam of Andhra Pradesh, and the former Red Flag faction led by K.N. Ramachandran of Kerala—had in 2005 become a single being called CPI(ML). The party had State units in a dozen States. The expulsion of Mr. Ramachandran and other functionaries by the central committee dominated by the two other factions has led to the breakdown of the unity.

At a news conference here on Tuesday, Subodh Mitra, member of the central committee, reiterated that Mr. Ramachandran, Mr. James and Mr. Sivaraman were now out of the party and that Ms. Bindu would function as the State party secretary. However, Mr. James told The Hindu that Mr. Ramachandran was still the all-India secretary.
