Buckley to Cyprus

Posted: 2009-07-14 15:35

Former Bafana Bafana winger Delron Buckley has agreed a deal to join Cyprus side Anorthosis Famagusta on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old had been without a club since helping German club FC Mainz into the Bundesliga at the end of last season, but has been lured to Cyprus by former Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp, who is now in charge of Famagusta.

Middendorp also coached Buckley while the pair were at Vfl Bochum together in the late 1990s and the duo will now plot to see the club safely through to the second qualifying round of the inaugural Europe League. Standing in their way are Montenegrin side FK Petrovac, with the first round, first leg, scheduled for Thursday.

Famagusta rose to prominence last season with a good showing in the Uefa Champions League, where they beat Greek side Olympiakos in the qualifying rounds, before seeing-off Panathinaikos and securing creditable draws against Inter Milan and Werder Bremen in the group stages.

The club is also the home of Iraqi left-winger Hawar Mulla Mohammed, who appeared for the Lions of Mesopatamia in the recent Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Famagusta are the third most successful side in Cypriot football history with 13 League titles, after APOEL (20) and Omonia (19).

What is stopping people like you and Fortune from coming home? You think you are too major to be seen running around in the South African league? Good luck with your move.

I wonder how some pple feel after they had just made a silly comment: "Buckley to Cyprus" - from nowhere - "Chiefs defender r not gud" - I got to be stupid to connect these 2 statements... what a yawn...

I think the only thing that matters to these guys is to make more money, it doesn't matter where they are playing. I don't think they are even dreaming of making the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2010 world Cup, so what is there for them to play for, just money.
