Energy Consumption

Similar to new generations of automobile engines, the Transrapid consumes less energy while providing the same output as high-speed railroads. Or, putting it the other way round, with the same energy input, the performance of the Transrapid is substantially higher.

The reasons: no losses due to friction with the non-contact technology, the high efficiency of the long-stator linear motor, the low weight of the vehicles, and the low aerodynamic resistance. Compared to highway and air traffic, the Transrapid's energy consumption is even three to five times less.

The following gives an example of energy consumed per seat for a distance of 300 km with three intermediate stops, depending on maximum speed:

200 km/h: 32 Wh/km 1,1 l gasoline/100 km
300 km/h: 47 Wh/km 1,6 l gasoline/100 km
400 km/h: 66 Wh/km 2,2 l gasoline/100 km
