Born in Elefsina on 17/8/1938.
He is married to Christina Christofaki and father of five children.
Profession: Lawyer, Economist.
Studies: He graduated from the University of Athens, majoring in Law and Economics. In 1973 he was declared Doctor of Economic Sciences of the University of Paris 1 (Pantheon, Sorbonne). At the same university he served as Appointed Instructor and Researcher and Director of the Economic Development Institute.

Parliamentary activities
Elected MP (PASOK) for Attiki in the general elections of 1981, 1985, 1989 (June and November), 1990, 1993, 1996 and 2000.
Member of the Standing Committees on Educational Affairs, and Defence and Foreign Affairs.
Social activities
He was actively involved in the struggle against the dictatorship and for this reason the junta deprived him of his Greek nationality.
In 1981 he was elected for the first time MP with the Panhellenic Socialist Party (PASOK), a status which he has held continuously up to this date.
He was Under-Secretary for Commerce (1982-1984), Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1984-1985), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1985-1989 and 1993-1994), Minister of Transport and Communications (1994), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1996-1999) and Minister for Culture (2000).
He was appointed Representative of the Hellenic Parliament at the Council of Europe (1989-1993, 2000-up this date) and at the WEU (2000-up this date).
He is member of the Political Council of PASOK.
