Mayday call in the Aleutians, Coast Guard responding

JUNEAU, Alaska - The Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Juneau launched multiple aircraft and a cutter after receiving a mayday call reporting the 58-foot commercial fishing vessel Icy Mist taking on water with four people on board off Akutan Island about 4:38 a.m.

The Coast Guard Cutter Munro, two MH-60 Jayhawks deployed in St. Paul and a HH-65 Dolphin in Dutch Harbor are en route.

The Icy Mist is now grounded along the shoreline of Akutan Island and is in danger of breaking up with the four people on board due to the rocky shoreline and 45 mph winds.

Due to the remoteness of Akutan Island, the mayday call was intially received by the vessel Arctic Fox, relayed to the Northern Glacier who contacted the Coast Guard.  Akutan is about 80 miles east of Dutch Harbor.
