Revere CARES Releases Expanded Action Plan

Revere CARES' newly released action plan for 2010 expands its work beyond underage drinking prevention to address violence and obesity as the coalition strives to build a healthier community.

In 2006, Revere CARES conducted an assessment of the coalition's progress in preventing underage drinking and drug use. Assessment activities included: (1) review of Youth Risk Behavior Survey and MGH Revere Community Survey data from 2005; (2) a key informant study of coalition capacity and local systems changes; (3) a participatory photo journalism project capturing community strengths and challenges through the eyes of residents of all ages; and (4) mapping of 2005 alcohol and drug related arrests and liquor outlet locations. Results were released at a Town Meeting in January 2006, and televised on cable TV.

The coalition then hosted Developing a Vision for a Healthy Revere 2010 in April 2006. Over 60 community members of all ages discussed the results of the assessment and worked together by neighborhood to set forth a vision for a healthier Revere. Coalition work groups later reviewed the visioning results, and set priorities for the next four years of coalition work. The Revere CARES Action Plan for 2010 is entitled, "The Community that Thought it Could, Did!" The plan sets forth strategies to continue underage drinking prevention and begin addressing violence and obesity.
