Run This Town
Monica Herrera, August 08, 2009 12:00 ET
Jay-Z demands respect for his Roc Nation conglomerate on the militant first single from his anticipated "Blueprint 3." Adding "Caesar" to his arsenal of nicknames, the rapper boasts about his upper-crust hip-hop wealth over a sharp, malevolent beat produced by Kanye West and No I.D.: "And they ain't spending no cake/ They should throw they hand in 'cuz they ain't got no spades/ My whole team got dough, so my banquet is looking like millionaire's row," he scoffs. Though Jay's understated delivery is fitting, at times it threatens to belabor the point. "Babe bro" West picks up the energy with his closing verse but falters mid-stream with a wayward reference to mood rings. Perhaps the song's saving grace: a slowly re-emerging Rihanna, who floods the hook with a resolute, chilling wail: "I'm addicted to the thrill/It's a dangerous love affair."

Albums Reviews
  • My Old, Familiar Friend
The Nashville-based singer/ songwriter Brendan Benson steps up his game on "My Old, Familiar Friend," his fourth solo release and first since a two-album stint fronting the Raconteurs with Jack White.
  • Blood From Stars
Two years after the release of his acclaimed album "Civilians," noted producer/songsmith Joe Henry returns with his 11th and most ambitious album to date.
  • Jessie James
Judging by some of the song titles ("Guilty," "My Cowboy," "Wanted") on her self-titled debut, one could say that 20-year-old Georgia newcomer Jessie James lives up to her name as the female version of the American outlaw.
Singles Reviews
  • When I'm Gone
Vivian Girls show growth as songwriters on the hazy tune, embracing their love for Brill Building girl-group harmonies more than ever before.
  • LOL :-)
The most ubiquitous abbreviation and emoticon of the mobile generation are now a song title.
  • Feels Just Like a Love Song
Many of Sara Evans' biggest hits are uptempo, life-affirming tunes ("Born to Fly," "Suds in the Bucket," "A Real Fine Place to Start"), and the Missourian's new single fits perfectly into the hit parade.
Concerts Reviews
  • No Doubt -- Concert Review
"Hella Good." That's the title of the futuristic funk workout No Doubt performed early in its 90-minute-plus set Wednesday at the Gibson Amphitheatre, but it also effectively summed up the quartet's performance.
  • Beyonce -- Concert Review
Beyonce recently topped Forbes' list of the richest stars under 30, but she clearly is not hoarding the money: A ton of it must have been spent on her latest spectacle of a tour.
  • Michael Jackson memorial
Balancing the delicate choices about entertainment vs. eulogy, the Michael Jackson memorial worked incredibly well as both without bowing to the expectations of either.
