TRIPOLI (Afrobasket 2009) - Defending champion of FIBA Africa Championship for Men, Angola continue its match realising its dream of a tenth title by advancing to the semi-finals Thursday in grand style with an 84-63 emphatic victory over Central Africa Republic in the Africa Union Hall in Tripoli, Libya.
The defending champion whose trade in stock is to use the first two quarters sizing up its opponents won the first quarter by 30-21 points to test the readiness of Romain Sato and his teammates tying the second quarter at 12 points apiece.
The Angolan with reigning championship most valuable player, Joaquim Gomes scoring 29 points and grabbing 9 rebounds begin the real test of the day winning the third quarter by 24-16 points to open up a 15 points gap of 66-49 points going into the last quarter which they also won by 18-14 points to edge out the Central Africa side who will now battle for classification of 5-8 position from Friday.
Gomes teammate, Carlos Morais added 27 points and 3 rebounds to the Angolan victory.
Sato could only manage to put in 14 points and 8 rebounds the lowest record achieved by him since the championship starts last week, while the duo of Francois Pehuoa and Yannick Zachee contributed 10 points each.
