Russell Brand's bizarre 'apology' over lewd radio prank to Andrew Sachs

Russell Brand has given a bizarre response to the scandal engulfing the BBC over his obscene prank calls to actor Andrew Sachs, grinning at reporters and chanting "Hare Krishna".

As MPs called for his sacking and Prime Minister Gordon Brown waded into the row, the controversial comic greeted every question with the religious mantra before driving off with his bodyguard.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Ross was keeping a low profile at his north London home, where he took delivery of a consignment of beer and wine.

Neighbours said he was planning a Halloween party.

Both presenters have sent flowers and personal letters of apology to Mr Sachs, a distinguished stage and screen actor best known for playing Manuel in Fawlty Towers.

Brand sent a bouquet of red roses and a "very nice and deeply apologetic" note, according to the actor.

The young woman at the centre of the furore, Mr Sachs' granddaughter, Georgina Baillie, has hired the celebrity publicist Max Clifford to handle her affairs.

Miss Baillie is "angry and upset" by what has happened, Mr Clifford said: "She doesn't know Jonathan Ross.

"She thought she knew Russell Brand.

"She felt genuinely surprised and disappointed that Russell would say those things about her."

He added: "She thought he wouldn't do that and she didn't expect it.

"She is also very upset because her granddad is very upset and she thinks the world of him."

The 23-year-old is a glamour model and member of a risque dance troupe called the Satanic Sluts.

She flew back from a performance in Austria when the scandal broke.

Pictures of Miss Baillie in an array of revealing outfits can be seen on her personal websites.

Asked about the pictures, Mr Sachs, 78, said: "I do not like it, would you? But it's her life and I just let her get on with it."

The actor said he did not know whether Brand's claims to have bedded his granddaughter were true.

"It's not for me to know these things but, of course, I would be horrified," he said.
