Torturer vs. Interrogator: Inquiry into why CIA destroyed torture tapes

Just to make sure that it is fully understood what the following two news reports are stating, I have substituted the words ‘torturer/torturing’ for the words ‘interrogator/interrogation’ in the excerpts below.

The US Justice Department and the CIA's internal watchdog have announced a joint inquiry into the spy agency's destruction of videotaped ‘torturing’ of two suspected terrorists, as the latest scandal to rock US intelligence gathered steam…

“General Hayden told agency employees last week that the recordings were destroyed out of fear the tapes would be leaked and reveal the identities of ‘torturers’. He said the sessions were videotaped to provide an added layer of legal protection for ‘torturers’ who were using new, harsh methods authorised by President George W. Bush as a way to break down the defences of recalcitrant prisoners.”

The White House said it will not answer questions about the CIA's destroying ‘torturing’ tapes of terrorism suspects, citing ongoing investigations into what some have called a cover-up…

“The videotapes, made in 2002, reportedly showed harsh ‘torturing’ of Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, who were among the first suspects 'tortured' by the CIA after the September 11, 2001 attacks.”

Hope that clears things up as to what is really happening.
