At least two people were killed as violent storms battered southern Spain. The victims were a married couple in their 70s. They died in the Andalucian city of Jaen when their car was swept away by floods. Madrid has issued an orange alert across the whole of southeastern Spain with rivers threatening to burst their banks as the rain continues to fall.

The Balearic Islands also said goodbye to summer, leaving holidaymakers wondering where the sun had gone. In just 12 hours, there were 37,000 lightning strikes. And, there is no let-up in sight: the weathermen say more rain is on the way.
