The difference between Animals and Monsters

A few weeks ago one of my dear friends explained to me the difference between animals and monsters. He is at present in the process of writing a book about the Holocaust, and being the best read person that I personally know of regarding this matter, I knew he was speaking from a place of authority. I learned a lot from him that day.

As I listened, all I could do was nod in agreement as he explained to me some of the crimes that were allowed to be committed in the name of honor, justice, God and peace. How a so-called civilized nation could stand idly by and cheer those that committed these crimes while victimizing those that bore the full blunt force of its shear madness. How it was possible that members of a species could perform such atrocious acts on certain segments of its populace, while those that they governed turned a blind eye to what was happening.

He told me that it is inaccurate to compare such beings to animals. Animals do not take pleasure in torturing and killing their own kind, or members of any other species for that matter. Animals kill out of immediate fear or necessity. And when the deed is done they continue on with their existence without seeking vengeance with indignation.

I listened, agreed, and tried to envision and understand his words. I, however, did not fully grasp what was being said until some time later. Until I came across two comments made about one of my articles.

A few days ago I wrote a short piece regarding the John Kerry student Taser incident. I posted the article on a few forums and received a tremendous amount of feedback. On one of the forums, the Guerrilla News Network, two members, bacchus and microdot, replied by linking two videos.

These two videos made me understand what my friend was so patiently trying to explain. They convey the difference between animals and monsters better then any words could ever accomplish. It was after watching these two videos in there entirety, that I fully understood what my dear friend meant by stating that beings who commit such horrendous acts as witnessed during World War II should not be referred to as animals. It is an insult to the Animal Kingdom to categorize them as anything other then Monsters.

I have linked those videos below:

Animals: Battle at Kruger

Monsters: UCLA Police Taser Student in Powell
