Snow forecast for Fairbanks area hills

Published Tuesday, September 22, 2009

FAIRBANKS — An inch or two of snow was expected to accumulate on ridges around Fairbanks Monday night, and some might even stick at lower elevations today, the National Weather Service said.

A strong cold front should cross the area today, the service forecast Monday. The snow should end by this evening.

While an inch or two of snow could fall on hills above 1,500 feet near Fairbanks, much thicker accumulations could arrive in areas to the north.

The weather service on Monday evening said several inches of heavy snow could fall on the summits crested by the Steese Highway northeast of Fairbanks.

The Alaska Department of Transportation alerted travelers on the Dalton Highway, northwest of Fairbanks, to expect snow and ice on the road from about Mile 28 onward. The department recommended snow chains. Winter maintenance vehicles will be operating, it said.

Farther north on the Dalton Highway, in the upper Koyukuk River valley, the weather service expected snow depths of three to six inches by Tuesday evening. Lesser snowfall depths were predicted across the Brooks Range and north to Prudhoe Bay.

Today’s expected first snow in Fairbanks comes the near the long-term average date of Sept. 21, the weather service reported. By Oct. 8, the average depth is 1 inch. The snow stays for the winter, on average, beginning Oct. 18,

After tonight, the weather service expects cloudy skies with highs near 45 to 50 and lows 25 to 30 through the weekend.

    Wirty dird!

I think it might end up being cold this winter. My birds are eating suet until well after dark. I can hear the frame tapping against the window. They've devoured one cake and are halfway through another. Never saw them do that before.

My daughter is learning to drive. WELL, we were pulling out of our Fred Meyer's parking space on Airport Way this evening, and I said, "oh NO." She hit the break really quick, "what, what did I do wrong." To which I said, "oh, sorry, I just saw a you know what land on the windshield and melt."

    It's here folks! It's here.

Got to love that beetlejuice, eh?

I drove some summits today, and the good news is: I don't think it's going to get low enough [elev. wise] to dust town much, and I don't think it's going to stay . . . yet.

Better not, I haven't finished digging my potatoes.
