The Orange County sheriff says a toddler was mauled to death at a rural home in eastern Orange County. The incident happened just before 7:00 Sunday night, at a home off Mountain Track Road.
The sheriff says a 23-month-old girl wandered out of her family's house into the yard while her mom was preoccupied. The family's pit bull, which was chained outside, attacked the girl.
Orange County Sheriff Mark Amos says a family member found the girl unresponsive in the backyard. She was covered with serious wounds. She was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 9:10 p.m.
The girl's name hasn't been released.
The pit bull was euthanized. Amos said the dog hadn't caused problems previously and had lived with the family for about 10 years.
The attack is still under investigation. Amos says members of the sheriff's office will talk it over with the commonwealth's attorney and decide later if there will be any charges. For right now, they are letting the family grieve.
