MANGALORE: In all, 51 research scholars will be awarded doctoral degrees (Ph.D.), three persons will be given honorary doctorates, 29 students will be awarded gold medals and 52 meritorious students will receive cash prizes at the 24th annual convocation of Mangalore University at Mangalagangotri on Saturday, according to K.M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, he said C. Rangarajan, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, will deliver the convocation address.

T.N. Chaturvedi, Governor and Chancellor of the university, will preside over the function and confer the degrees.

Dr. Kaveriappa said honorary doctorates will be given to Amrut Someshwar, B. Nanjamma Chinnappa and N. Santosh Hegde.

Mr. Someshwar, a researcher in Kannada and Tulu literature and folklore, has been chosen for the highest honour of the university (D.Lit) for his contribution to Yakshagana, literature and culture. His works include, Yakshagana Prasanga Samputa, Tulu Baduku, Avilu, Yakshagana Hejje Guruthu, Bhagavathi Aaradhane, Uppukadalu, Ele Gili, Teerada Tere, Hrudaya Vachanagalu, Maanavathe Geddaga and Rudrashile Saakshi. Mr. Someshwar of Mangalore is also a recipient of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award and the Kannada Rajyotsava Award. He taught at Vivekananda College, Puttur, from 1967 to 1993.

Ms. Chinnappa of Kodagu has been chosen for the honorary doctorate (D.Lit) for her contribution to education and statistics. She served in the Federal Department of Statistics in Canada for over two decades. She was a consultant to the World Bank, the World Health Organisation, Social Development Division of the United Nations in India and the National Council for Applied Economic Research.

She has translated Nadikerianda Chinnappa's book "Pottole Palame", a collection of Kodava folk songs and tradition, into English in collaboration with her husband B.M. Chinnappa.

N. Santhosh Hegde, a native of Nitte in Karkala taluk and the former Judge of the Supreme Court, will be given an honorary Doctor of Law degree for his contribution to law and justice.

He served as Advocate General of Karnataka and became the first Additional Solicitor General of India from Karnataka in 1989.

He has the rare distinction of being appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court directly from the Bar. Mr. Hegde is at present Chairman of the Telecom Disputes and Settlement and Appellate Tribunal.

K. Sundar Naik, Registrar, K. Sooryanarayana Rao, Registrar (Evaluation), G.P. Shivaram, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, and K. Chinnappa Gowda, Head of the Department of Kannada, were present.
