3.0 out of 5 stars An acceptable attempt, December 26, 2005
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Sega Casino for the Nintendo DS is the kind of casino game that will satisfy anyone who loves casino games for the games themselves. If you are the kind of player who needs a walk-through 3D casino, a face maker, and other non-related extras, you will be severely disappointed. This game is all casino with little of anything else.

Game play is excellent. I have not noticed any mathematical bugs as of yet (something that has almost become the norm in this genre) and the interface is very user-friendly. Also, the graphics are sharp and clear. The game automatically saves your balance, allowing for you to abruptly end your game without losing any data, which is a major plus.

The negative side of this game, however, will be a problem for some players and is worth mentioning. The game includes a great deal of variety, but more than half of it is locked away from a new player. For example, the game offers Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, Baccarat, Texas Hold'em, Seven-card stud, Chuck-a-luck, keno, Jacks or Better, Deuces wild, and Double Bonus video poker. The first five games I mentioned are available when you turn on the game for the first time. The last five games are not and have to be unlocked by earning outrageous stacks of chips. The betting limits also have to be unlocked, meaning that when you begin, you can only play at tables with a $1-$100 betting limit. These unlockable features that programmers put into games are just stupid. If programmers must play games with their customers in such a way, I would suggest that they offer a cheat code that comes with the instruction manual that can be used by people who don't want to waste their time with such stupidity.

The game does have a saving grace, however. If you are moderately good at Texas Hold'em, you will be able to defeat the rather sub-par AI and earn the chip amounts that allow you to unlock the other 65% of the game. If you are really poor at Texas Hold'em, however, you might as well pass this title up. You will not be able to win these chip counts with the other games because the low betting limits will restrict you from being able to bet high enough to even have a chance. And as any gambler can tell you, in the long-term, you will always lose. You might have also noticed that I have made no mention of slots and that is because this game didn't include any. Now, this is not so much a problem for me, because I am a table game player, but to be honest, it would have been nice to have access to a jackpot of some kind in order to assist with earning high chip counts to unlock the other parts of the game. This aspect just was not thought out too well.

Finally, multi-player via direct download to another system is available, but you can only play Texas Hold'em, Seven card stud (if you unlocked it), and Blackjack. Surprise! Surprise! The other games are not multi-player accessible.

Come on people! Are there no programmers out there that can produce a well-balanced casino game???? It's not that hard. Stop messing around with unlockable garbage and concentrate your programming energy on a solid, accurate, functional, casino game.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's OK, September 22, 2006
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I only play texas hold em on this game although I've unlocked everything. The AI is pretty stupid but it allows me to brush up on some basics while I'm on the go. Umm... I've tried the other games and they're alright but didn't really hold my interest. The graphics are serviceable if not all that pretty. The video poker interface is really weird. Roulette is only fun in very small doses. Black Jack is just you and the dealer so it's not all that fun. That's why I've mainly stuck with the texas hold em. But if that's all you want/need then this game's fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some fun games but doesn't match Club House, May 4, 2007
By Ari S (Philadelphia) - See all my reviews
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This is a great game and the Texas Hold'em Poker is a lot of fun to play. It's not a big deal that some of the games are locked, if you are losing, you can just turn off the system and restart, and then you can only elect to save once you've earned enough money to unlock the more advanced levels. There are even some things I like about Sega Casino more than Club House, like the Texas Holdem game seems to go faster and I like that you can bet all your money at once, as opposed to Club House. However, overall Sega Casino is 4 starts compared to Club House's 5 stars in my ratings book. If you are choosing between, I'd go for Club House.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Standout in a Sea of Bad Casino Games
Sega Casino really was a pleasant surprise. There are so many bad casino games out there that I have played, I didn't have really high hopes for this game.
