Los Angeles managed to get the best of St. Louis’ ace in Game 1 of its NL Division Series, but the Dodgers still have a daunting task at hand.

The Dodgers look to extend their series lead when they face Adam Wainwright(notes) and the visiting Cardinals on Thursday afternoon.

Los Angeles didn’t waste any time putting pressure on Cy Young Award candidate Chris Carpenter(notes) in its 5-3, series-opening victory Wednesday.

Matt Kemp(notes) hit a two-run, first-inning homer to highlight a 12-hit effort for the Dodgers, who handed Carpenter his first career loss against them after reaching him for four runs in five innings.

“We’re just happy that we got the win,” said Manny Ramirez(notes), who went 1 for 4 and is batting .483 in nine postseason games for the Dodgers. “So let’s see what happens. We still got two more to go.”

Rafael Furcal(notes) added three hits with an RBI for Los Angeles, which was outscored 31-19 while going 2-5 against St. Louis during the regular season. Furcal is batting .438 against Wainwright, who led the NL in wins, finishing 19-8 with a 2.63 ERA.

Wainwright will make his first postseason appearance since closing out the Cardinals’ 4-2 World Series-clinching victory in Game 5 against Detroit in 2006. The right-hander is the first pitcher since Bob Welch in 1981 for the Dodgers to save a World Series game and then draw a starting assignment in his return to the playoffs

Only once this season when Carpenter and Wainwright started back-to-back did St. Louis lose both games.

“(We’ll) try to do the same thing we did against Carpenter - work him, try to get to that bullpen and get a win,” said Kemp. “We’ve still got our work cut out for us.”

Wainwright is 44-23 with a 3.14 ERA in three seasons as a starter for the Cardinals.

“It took me the first half of ’07 to sort of find out what kind of pitcher I was as a starter, what was my identity,” said Wainwright, who went 7-1 with a 2.29 ERA in his last 11 contests. “What works best for me is taking a reliever mentality out there to start and get the guy out as fast as I can get him out as many times as I can do it.”

Wainwright is 2-2 with a 3.48 ERA in five starts against the Dodgers, including 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA in two this season.

“Well, I’m not going to put too much stock into that,” he said. “So I’ve had success against them because I went out and executed pitches.”

The Dodgers counter with Clayton Kershaw(notes), who makes his first postseason start. The 21-year-old left-hander allowed one run over two innings of relief spanning two appearances against Philadelphia in last year’s NL Championship Series.

“I’ll probably be nervous for sure. I’m nervous every time I pitch,” Kershaw said. “I think it’s how you handle the nerves, how you channel it, how you can use it to your advantage sometimes.”

Kershaw went 8-8 with a 2.82 ERA in 30 starts this season, but is 0-3 despite a 2.60 ERA in his last 11 since beating Houston on July 18. The culprit has been virtually non-existent support from his offense. The Dodgers have supported Kershaw with 1.54 average runs in his last 11 outings, including one total run in his four starts since the beginning of September.

He is 1-0 with a 1.82 ERA in four career starts against the Cardinals.

Albert Pujols(notes) - a career .318 hitter in the postseason - is 4 for 7 against Kershaw, but went 0 for 3 with a pair of intentional walks Wednesday as St. Louis stranded 14 runners.

The offensive struggles have been common of late for the Cardinals, who scored three runs or fewer in 12 of their 17 games to close September.

“We’ve just got to keep battling,” said St. Louis’ Ryan Ludwick(notes), who had two hits with an RBI, but left the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

Cardinals third baseman Mark DeRosa(notes) had three hits and drove in a run in the ninth - the only run allowed by five Los Angeles relievers over 5 1/3 innings.

mgm #677: You are so correct with your comments. I myself try to ignore the foul language, bad-mouthing of the other team and the dissing of opposing players who screw up. But sometimes it's hard to ignore because bad behaviour is so common-place. We should just play good, clean baseball. And may the better team (at least for the subject games) win. Go, Dodgers! Let's win #3 in St. Louis and close this thing out.

Hey richard s. Not sure if that was supposed to be a slam, but Dubney was being a good guy and I think that deserves some respect. There's nothing wrong with being a good sport win or lose, and I'd rather read the intelligent comments than the ranting of the illiterate crazies on both sides. I'm not above taking shots at posters like Ned and Zoob, but generally with facts. Sorry, just a personal preference. Those of us with estrogen instead of testosterone just have a slightly different take on things. That I can relate to a team whose closer implodes in a crucial situation (been there, done that this year) does not make me any less of a Dodger fan (since 1961).

The bottom line, Cards fans, is that the Dodgers are up 2-0 and, now, the Cards must win three in a row with
one at Dodger Stadium----possible but not likely! GO DODGER BLUE!

Todays game is different-im so glad the dodgers won--but im still old school-i would have definately left wainright in-the cards weakness is thier bullpen and its good they are using smoltz as a starter --good for us dodger fans-smoltz cant pitch for 6 or 7 inns but he sur would be good out of the pen-larussa is overmanaging-he always has-he has 2 great starters -he should use them in a short sieries-remember the last time-----johnson and schilling?----most managers dont do it this way now-but if thats all you got and you want the title -guess what-use them-the dodgers have the best staff in the nl and that is why they will go to the world sieries--but the angels will beat them-thier 8 man staff is just as good and the offense and defense is better-----go california-- and put the dh in the nl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't agree with all the fans who are saying the Cardinals are dead. They are a classy organization with good management. Game 2 is history and the Dodgers were very lucky to win it. One more win, however, is still needed. I hope it comes on Saturday. Go, Dodger Blue!

O.K. Holliday misplayed the ball . However, that still only left a runner on second with 2 out. Franklin proceeded to have a meltdown ! Why isn't anyone putting the bame where it's deserved ,on the Pitcher !

You're right Don. I think the box score showed he had thrown 100 pitches but still could have gone another inning easily. Whether that would have changed the outcome we can only speculate. The Dodgers have been staging comebacks like that all year and when they have that much confidence in themselves they can pretty much hit anyone in late clutch situations. But at least Wainwright would have had a chance to win or lose and not watch someone who hadn't had a bonafide save in months. I've never before been critical of tony (at least in writing) but I have to question that move.
But again, if the bats don't come alive it's gonna be tough the rest of the way. I think my calculator died counting all the men LOB. But hey, Saturday's another day.

    GO CARDS !!

I have been to quite a few dodger games in my day and I must say I have never heard the stadium that loud before Thursdays game!!! It was hands down the best game I have ever seen in person. The magic that was in the air was so fun to experience. Every Dodger Fan that was there and even the ones that weren't willed the team to win with their loud support... Way to go Dodgers we love you guys. Thank you Joe Torre for the team and the tickets you let us have for game 2. GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!
