ACADEMY AWARD FOR DAVID LEE
ASSG member David Lee was co-winner of the Oscar for best achievement in sound for the Warner Bros/Village Roadshow Pictures feature "The Matrix", shot at Fox Studios Australia and Sydney locations.

David was presented with the award at the 72nd Academy of Motion picture Arts and Sciences Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, on March 26th (March 27th Australian time).
It was the first Oscar to be awarded to an australian sound recordist in recent history.

"The Matrix" won four oscars at the Academy Awards including Sound.
David was sound recordist on this film working with boom operators Gerry Nucifora and ASSG member Jack Friedman.

The Oscar for Sound was presented to the team of US re-recording mixers John Reitz, Gregg Rudloff, david Campbell and "Ossie" production mixer David Lee.

 

The British Academy announced the winners of this year's BAFTA Awards on Sunday 9th April in London.

No Prizes for guessing the Sound award went to the team from The Matrix. David's been a real jet-setter collecting awards

GOLDEN REEL NOMINATION
FARSCAPE (Series 1), the Jim Henson Creature Shop Sci-Fi series, has been nominated for "Television episodic - Effects & Foley" in the 47th 1999 MPSE Golden Reel Awards. Filmed and posted in Australia, the effects crew consists of Cate Cahill, David White and Alex Wong, with Foley by Les Fiddes and Mauricio Hernandez - all ASSG members. The crew said, "We have Philmsound to thank for their generous contribution in providing the tools and space for our creativity".

Two 1999 AFTRS Sound Graduates, Luke Dunn Gielmuda and Royce Sanderson, have been nominated for the Verna Fields Award for Best Student Sound Editing for "Project Vlad" and "Little Echo Lost". There are only 4 finalists and 2 of them are AFTRS films. Luke won the 1998 Verna Fields Award for his work on another AFTRS film, "Preoccupied". The winners will be announced on Saturday, March 25, 2000 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City, California.
FLICKERFEST AWARDS
Audio Loc Sound Design Award for Best Achievement in Sound ($300 from Audio Loc Sound Design and 10 Dat tapes from Film Support) was awarded to ASSG member Sam Petty for "Flowergirl" (Australia).
SMPTE honours Savage
The New York-based Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has honoured managing director of Soundfirm Roger Savage in this year's fellow awards for "attaining an outstanding rank among engineers or executives in the industry". Savage was selected for work including the first Dolby-mixed film in Australia Mad Max II and the "first totally-automated feature film", "Dead Calm"
RYCOTE WINS OSCAR
Rycote is pleased to announce that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected Vivienne Dyer and Chris Woolf to be among the twelve recipients of Academy Awards presented for scientific and technical achievement at a ceremony to be held 4th March 2000 in Beverly Hills. The award is being presented for the development of the Rycote Microphone Windshields Modular System.
