October 21, 2009 - Rubio Cuts Into Crist Lead In Florida GOP Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Obama's Approval Up Slightly With Big Gender Gap

Word format

Gov. Charlie Crist's lead over former state house speaker Marco Rubio in the 2010 Republican U.S. Senate primary has been cut in half from 55 - 26 percent to 50 - 35 percent, but the Governor tops the leading Democrat, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, 51 - 31 percent among all voters, while Rubio trails Meek 36 - 33 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Republican State Attorney General Bill McCollum edges Democrat State CFO Alex Sink 36 - 32 percent in the 2010 race for Governor, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey finds. McCollum has a commanding 43 - 7 percent lead over State Sen. Paula Dockery in a primary for the GOP nomination, not surprising since 91 percent of Floridians don't know enough about her to have an opinion.

President Barack Obama gets a split 48 - 46 percent approval rating, compared to a negative 47 - 48 percent score August 20. His slightly elevated standing in Florida is similar to the pattern that is occurring in a number of other states this fall.

"Gov. Charlie Crist's lead, which had been 29 points August 19, has come back down to earth. His margin is still formidable, but obviously Marco Rubio's focus on convincing Republican conservatives that he, not Crist, is their kind of guy is bearing fruit," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Among Republicans, 44 percent view Rubio favorably, 3 percent unfavorably, up from 24 - 6 percent August 19. But fully half don't know enough about him to have an opinion. Filling in that blank slate for that half of GOP voters - positively by Rubio and negatively by Crist - will decide the nomination.

"Floridians now give Crist the worst overall job approval of his governorship, 59 - 31 percent, but governors of many other states would sell their first born - or at least their running mate - for numbers like that," said Brown. "But because only Republicans can vote in the GOP primary, Rubio's strong favorable/unfavorable ratio among Republicans is something that should worry the Governor."

Crist's 51 - 31 percent lead over Meek is largely due to his 58 - 22 percent margin among independent voters. In a Rubio-Meek face-off, independents tip to the Republican by a small 31 - 27 percent margin.

McCollum benefits from not only better name recognition than Sink, but a higher job approval than she enjoys. Voters approve 53 - 19 percent of McCollum's performance as attorney general; by 38 - 23 percent they give Ms. Sink a thumbs up as CFO.

"McCollum retains a lead, but almost a quarter of the electorate is undecided, giving Ms. Sink plenty of opportunity with 13 months until Election Day," said Brown. "As far as the Republican gubernatorial nomination goes, Ms. Dockery has a long, long way to go to become competitive.

"It is interesting that President Obama's approval rating has inched up in a state with many senior citizens, voters who are especially sensitive to the health care debate," Brown said. "Obama still gets a 50 - 41 percent thumbs down from independent voters. Women approve of Obama 51 - 42 percent, while men disapprove 51 - 43 percent."

Crist's choice of his former campaign manager, George LeMieux, to replace Mel Martinez in the U.S. Senate splits the electorate almost equally: 34 percent approve, 32 disapprove and 34 percent aren't sure. Two-thirds of voters haven't decided yet about LeMieux's job performance, with the rest split almost evenly between approval and disapproval.

Florida's other U.S. Senator, Bill Nelson gets a 45 - 31 approval rating.

From October 12 - 18, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,078 Florida voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. The survey includes 396 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.9 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio and the nation as a public service and for research.
