CrunchBang Linux 8.10.01 released

Last night I uploaded and released the final CrunchBang Linux 8.10.01 build. I am really quite pleased with this release and it seems to be working well on my own systems. I will keep this post short as I have already written about the release on the new CrunchBang Linux blog. All I wanted to say here is, I have really enjoyed working on this release; all the feedback, help and support has been quite overwhelming. It has also been fun to meet and chat with lots of like-minded Linux enthusiasts and geeks :)

I've just tried v 8.04.02 and found it very impressive. So, lauching v8.10.01 is a good news! I'm dling it at the moment and I'll post my first impressions soon. Does this new version support internationalization out-of-the-box? Sorry, I'm french and typing my wpa passphrase on a qwerty kb was the only annoying thing I could find with CrunchBang. See U soon.

Not yet :( This is something that needs to be worked on. Regarding changing the default keymap, run this command to get the French keyboard layout:

    setxkbmap fr

    Hope this helps.

dl finished, I'm burning the cdrom. I'll give it a try once done. If my first impressions are good, I think I'll crash my kubuntu 8.04 (too heavy and slow, too unstable and not as fully usable as kde 3.5.x imo) and install CrunchBang instead. ;-)

Are there any plans to publish a 64bit version? if not are there any plans to post detail descriptions of the methods used in making the 32bit version, so maybe users wanting a 64bit version could possibly make it themselves or maybe even help you with making it?

  5. Philip wrote,

@JMK: A 64bit version has been requested on numerous occasions in the past. I have made no promises, but hopefully it might possibly happen this time. Having said that, the "lite" version is currently being produced, so if it happens it will be sometime after that.

Have you thought about preparing a crunchbang-like metapackage for Ubuntu? Ie. ubuntu-minimal-desktop. I think it would be nice to have it in universe. This package would install minimal desktop environment (X.org, Openbox, basic dependencies) on Ubuntu server. What do you think about it?

  7. Philip wrote,

@Azrael Nightwalker: That is a very good idea. The current meta-packages would need some work first as they include some non-free packages and stuff. I will look into it though. Thanks :)

    Hi again,

After some testings I can say it's a really good release. Always so light, fast as hell, goodlooking… I've just noticed a bigger memory footprint compared to 8.04.02. Everything else seems working as it should.

I've decided it will be my next home and work OS. I'll have some work before installing CrunchBang. Saving important documents for example (lot of music, movies and so on. U know what I mean…)

+ 1 Azrael. Creating a metapackage would help me and others to easily upgrade from an existing (K/X/…)Ubuntu installation to CrunchBang with a single magical apt-get command. Few suggestions : could U consider replacing firefox with swiftweasel, installing prelink, preload and Boinc (manager only. Let us install optimized or not versions of Boinc client and apps as provided by lunatics : http://lunatics.kwsn.net/) we all are 'crunchers' aren't we? Another thing : it would be nice to see more ASCII-Art. For example, I think about the splash screen's progress bar, I think it could be A-Arted in some interesting ways. Installation by default of 'bb', the AA demo etc etc

Excellent work U did with 8.10.01. Continue this way : keep it light, fast, simple and dark for ever!

I am just in the works of downloading and installing the newest Crunchbanglinux and saw that it was a 666mb big iso. Is this on purpos or is it just a fun thing?

:) Keep up the awesome work!

  10. Philip wrote,

@Spr3AdTuX: Thank you for your feedback. It has all been noted. The memory footprint is slightly bigger, I am looking into it. I think your suggestion of having more ASCII art is a great one, I will give it some thought :)

@Joel: LOL, no it was not done on purpose, but I am thinking of code naming this release, "The Number of the Beast" :)

    I like the 666 MB iso ^^

i'll be thrilled to try it in my next computer : dell inspiron mini 12.

hello, Could you tell me how upgrade 8.10.01 Testing version to final version? I have configure Testing version on my daughter laptop and I don't want to install everything again.

Like I say in this topic http://crunchbang.org/archives/2008/11/19/crunchbang-linux-8-dot-10-dot-01-testing/ I could make polish translation of CrunchBang Linux. Best regard

Just installed your 8.04 on an old laptop. 192mb ram,pIII. It's fast fast fast! I also have vector linux gold 5.9 in another partition, and I feel that crunchbang is at least as fast. And the good look. And apt-get repos is so much better than slapt-get.

    Here's a 666 themed pat-on-the-back

cowsay -f satanic.cow Well done on the job !

  14. Hanna wrote,

I think I will at least download the iso. I'm a big fan of Openbox so this could be perfect for me. Thanks :)

  15. Seb wrote,

Great job! I'm currently trying the live cd, but I'll install CrunchBang on the hd for sure! The computer is a PIII 500 MHz with about 750 MB RAM and works much smoother that Xubuntu 8.04 The only problem: can't get cf keyboard at startup as with *ubuntu live cds.

;-)) Keep up the good job!

@szamot83: The changes from testing to final were actually rather trivial, you can find a list at: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic/25/81001-changes-from-testing-to-final/

Great distro Philip, I can't say enough how much I enjoy it. Everything works perfectly, I keep finding small things that are already configured, such as the scoll on my trackpad. Really first rate man!

@Daniel: I am sorry, but I do not really have any experience of working with touchscreens. Can I suggest that you post a message on the forums? Hopefully someone will be able to provide some assistance.
