The Vancouver-based website Suite101.com, an site that features various advice and how-to columns from freelance writers , officially launched a Spanish version of it's site -- Suite101.net -- today at the Shore Club Hotel in Miami Beach.
The site pays writers based on how how much money is generated from advertising attached to their stories, and one of the highest paid writers made $5,000 in one month on the English site. About 40 writers and editors for Suite101.net are working out of Miami, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Mexico and Madrid.
Although the headquarters are in Madrid, the company wanted to kick off the site's launch in Miami because "it really is the hub of the Spanish-speaking world," said Peter Berger, president and CEO of Suite101.com.
The sites, which are kind of like an online magazine of various topics, don't focus on any specific niche. Berger said the biggest challenge is getting the word out, but the English site has seen growth this year. However, he said it's hard to tell what spurred the growth, like if it was due to writers trying to make a few extra bucks in a rough economy, or just better marketing.
I have many Spanish friends, and from what I hear the new Suite101.net is just as good as the original one. One of them even got tickets through Last Minute Travel and got to be at the opening at the Shore Club Hotel.
