Graduate study at CERES is enriched by the Summer Internship Program, which helps students secure first-hand experience in the region of their interest. These internships are open to CERES MA students and graduate students in affiliated departments at the University of Toronto. The Nancy Park Travel Scholarship also involves an internship component.

CERES offers exchange programs for students at CERES and graduate students from other departments at the University of Toronto with University of Graz in Austria, Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, the University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Ukraine, and the University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski" in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Summer Internship Program

The Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies has sponsored summer internships since 1993. The aim of these grants is to provide area studies graduate students with overseas life and work experience, and to improve their language skills. Internships must be at least eight weeks long, while placements extending over all three summer months are preferred.

Past placements have included work in banking, journalism, translation, advertising sales, business management, accounting, project coordination, market study and teaching. Interns have been employed by Moscow News, Dow Chemical Company, Promstroy Bank, McDonald's Head Office and Bates, Saatchi & Saatchi in Russia; parliamentary committees of Ukraine and Latvia; The Prague Post and IDC Holdings in the Czech and Slovak Republics, by NGOs such as an AIDS education project in Moscow and the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Foundation in Bulgaria, and many other organizations based throughout East Central Europe and the former USSR, ranging from Poland to Albania, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.

Applicants are encouraged to take an active role in identifying potential employers and seeking out job opportunities. CERES will assist in this process based on past experience and networks of information and contacts throughout the region.

The Summer Internship Program is designed to provide a first international career related work experience. It will not ordinarily support a return visit to a country where a student has previously lived for an extensive period; for students in this second category, limited logistical and other support may be available on a case-by-case basis, once the needs of students in the first category have been met.

The CERES grant may be used to fund travel, visas, health insurance, rent, and a per diem overseas, while employers are expected to pay an average local salary or provide free accommodation in lieu of pay. Applications are invited both from students with existing job offers and those who require assistance in finding a suitable placement.

DEADLINE: Applications should be received in full at CERES by February 15. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

Students will be accommodated in the University of Graz student dormitories.

The University of Graz exchange program offers students first hand experience with Austria ’s rich history as well as the surrounding region. For more details on this exchange program, please click here.

As the second largest city in Austria , Graz is a particularly fine example of a central European urban centre, which presents itself with fascinating landmarks and historic monuments from its origins in the 9th century to the rule of the Habsburgs. The old city is a harmonious blend of architectural styles and artistic movements under the protection of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Simultaneously, Graz is host to a thriving contemporary cultural life.

The University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski" maintains relations with educational institutions and organizations from more than thirty countries from around the world and is part of many international programs. The main university building, located in the heart of downtown Sofia, is just steps from the Parliament, the National Library, and is surrounded by countless shops, vibrant cafes, restaurants, and art galleries.

Central European University
This exchange is open to CERES MA students who have a record of academic excellence. The successful candidate will spend one semester (September-December or January-April) studying at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. CERES will provide the cost of travel and a living stipend, and CEU will provide a tuition waiver and dormitory housing.

The CEU is an international institution for post-graduate study and research. Founded by Hungarian-American philanthropist George Soros in 1991, CEU also promotes educational development and policy making throughout Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. CEU has a charter from the Board of Regents of the State of New York. Beginning with 100 students in its first year in Prague (1991), CEU has grown rapidly.

During the 2008/09 academic year, enrolment stood at1500 students drawn from over100 countries, including those of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, Western Europe, North America, and Asia. More than 60 professors from 26 countries teach at the CEU. In addition, prestigious visiting professors give frequent lectures and seminars at the university, thus giving students access to highly respected academics from top-level institutions in Europe and North America. The language of instruction at CEU is English.

Masaryk University
This exchange is open to CERES MA students in all fields who have a record of academic excellence. The successful candidate will spend one semester (September-December) studying at Masaryk University in Moravia. CERES will provide the cost of travel and a living stipend, and Masaryk University will provide a tuition waiver and dormitory housing.

Masaryk University is named after the founder and first president of Czechoslovakia, Tomas G. Masaryk, who supported the opening of the university in 1919 because he knew that the survival of democracy in Czechoslovakia depended directly on broadening access to higher education. As the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, Brno combines the vibrancy of a university city with a rich historic legacy. With a population of 400,000 and the capital of Moravia, the city is home to six universities and more than 35,000 students, and is within a few hours' travel of Prague, Budapest, Bratislava, Krakow, Vienna and Berlin.

Masaryk University is presently made up of eight faculties with approximately 130 departments, institutes, and clinics covering a wide range of academic disciplines and spheres of research. The university has 1,135 faculty members. More than 14,000 students study at the university and 3,578 of these are provided with accommodation in halls of residence.

Students will attend the Central European Studies Program, which is an interdisciplinary program for one semester, designed for those who want a challenging educational experience in the heart of Europe and who want to develop the global perspective they will need to face the future. Courses include studies of the social, economic, political and cultural transformations that have shaped Central Europe at the end of the 20th century, and the changes facing Europe in a broader perspective in the beginning of the 21st century. Courses are in English, along with Czech language study.

The University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy," Kyiv, Ukraine
This exchange is open to MA and PhD students in all fields who have a record of academic excellence. The successful candidate will spend one semester (September-December or January-May) studying at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The level of financial support varies and may include the cost of travel, a living and housing stipend, and overseas health insurance.

Established in the 17th century by the Metropolitan Petro Mohyla, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy became a widely respected educational institution and a centre for the development of Ukraine's first national political, cultural, and government elite. The Academy was closed in 1817 by the Russian tsarist government. In 1992, after a 175-year hiatus, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy was reinstated as a secular teaching institution, becoming a symbol of the rebirth of independent Ukraine. The Academy was granted the status of "National University" in 1994.

Widely regarded as the principal school in Ukraine for the social sciences and humanities, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is also a leading centre for social and political research. Some 3000 students from across Ukraine and abroad receive their education from leading Ukrainian and western scholars. The Academy has become a centre for the promotion of democratic values in Ukraine, and its students are actively involved in the political life of the country.

The Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is a bilingual institution: courses are taught in Ukrainian and English. Approximately 40 per cent of the library holdings are in foreign languages, primarily in English. Exchange students can also take advantage of being in the capital of Ukraine, the site of major government and legislative bodies, non-governmental organizations, and the richest state libraries and archives.

This is the inaugural year of the University of Toronto's Summer Program in Moscow, Russia. The program is designed to introduce students to this unique region through academic instruction and immersion in the local culture.

The program is hosted by the Russian State University of the Humanities (RGGU). Established in 1991, RGGU is focused on Russian humanistic studies and Russia's place in global trends, and also supports cultural life and discourse in Russia. The program is run in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, involving both their faculty and students.
Central Europe
This is the fourth year of the University of Toronto's Summer Program in Central Europe. The program is designed to introduce students to this unique region through academic instruction, immersion in the local culture, and several three-day field trips to other cities in the area. This summer offering has been so successful that it has filled up before the application deadline each year.

The program is hosted by Masaryk University in Brno, an institution established in 1919, only three months after the Czechoslovak Republic itself, and named for the country’s founder and first President.
England
This is the seventh year that the University of Toronto has offered a summer program in England. Since 2001, almost 300 students have enjoyed the experience of studying British culture and history while immersed in the United Kingdom.

The summer program in England is hosted by Jesus College at Oxford University, in the heart of downtown Oxford. Jesus College is the only Oxford college to date from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, receiving its first royal charter in 1571. Oxford alumni include T.S. Eliot, Indira Gandhi, Aldous Huxley, Margaret Thatcher, J.R.R. Tolkien, and T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia).
France
This is the sixth year of the University of Toronto Summer Program in Tours, France. Almost 400 students have participated since 2002. The program is designed for students who wish to develop their French language skills and those interested in learning about French culture and civilization.

This program is hosted by the Institut de Touraine, which is affiliated with the Université Francois Rabelais de Tours. The Institut has been teaching French language and culture studies since 1912; currently, students from over 80 countries attend every summer. The Institut offers weekly sporting activities, cultural activities and tours.
Germany
This will be the sixth year that the University of Toronto has offered a summer program in Berlin. Almost 200 students have enthusiastically participated in the program since it began.

The Berlin summer program is hosted by the University of Toronto in Berlin (UTB), a UofT research and teaching centre in the heart of Europe. UTB is located in Gendarmenmarkt Square, the historic hub of Berlin, amidst famous landmarks such as the French Cathedral, the German Cathedral, and the State concert hall.
Italy
The Summer Program in Siena, established in 1972, was our first summer abroad program and was the model for the other summer programs. Since its inception, over 3700 students from across Canada have completed a University of Toronto summer course in Siena. The praise for the program has been consistently and overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

Your host is the University of Siena, Italy's second oldest university dating back to 1240. It is a state university with over 18,000 students. The University of Siena is also home to the Siena-Toronto Centre, which coordinates a variety of initiatives on Canadian culture.
