The Right Reverend Ian Cundy, 1945-2009

The Rt Revd Ian Cundy served as Bishop of Peterborough from 1996 to 2009.
He had been diagnoised with mesothelioma in October 2007, and died less than three months before his planned early retirement. He leaves his widow Jo and three grown up children.

Bishop Ian was born in April 1945 and attended Monkton Combe School near Bath. Then he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, before training for the ministry at Tyndale Hall, Bristol (now part of Trinity College).

He was ordained deacon in 1969 and priest in 1970, and was Curate of Christ Church, New Malden. From 1973-1977 he lectured in Church History and Doctrine at Oak Hill Theological College in London.

Between 1978 and 1983 he was the Team Rector of Mortlake with East Sheen in south west London and in 1978, the then Bishop of Southwark asked him also to be his Examining Chaplain.

In 1983 he was appointed as the Warden of Cranmer Hall at St John's College, Durham, where he stayed for nine years. In 1992 he was appointed as the Bishop of Lewes. He became Bishop of Peterborough in 1996.

He was involved with many organisations both within and outside of the church and in 1998 became Chairman of the Council for Christian Unity. He was a member of the Anglican Old Catholic International Conference between 1980 and 1990 and the Faith and Order Advisory Group between 1981 and 1996. He was a member of the Board of Ministry between 1991 and 1992 and a member of the Court of the University of Sussex between 1992 and 1996.

He was the President of St John's College Durham from 1999-2008 and was governor of Monkton Combe School between 1986 and 1998, Eastbourne College between 1993 and 1996 and Lancing College between 1994 and 1998. In 1997 he became a governor of what is now the University of Northampton. He was also a trustee of Oakham School and Uppingham School.

Tributes to Bishop Ian:

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams has said:
"I was deeply saddened to hear of Bishop Ian's sudden and unexpected death. Our hearts and prayers are with his wife Jo, his children Rob, Paul and Liz and all those who loved and treasured Ian as a friend, a priest and a bishop. He will be deeply mourned in the diocese of Peterborough which he served with love and distinction. We thank God for the example Ian gave us of how generous love is shared with joy and a spirit of self-sacrifice".

The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy said:
"Bishop Ian was one of the first bishops to welcome me into the region as a new colleague 10 years ago and I have really valued his friendship. He played a key role in ecumenical relations nationally and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are now with his wife Jo and all the family at this very sad time.”

Dr Anthony Russell, Bishop of Ely, said:
“Ian was a particularly good friend and a deeply respected pastor and bishop. He will be remembered for his important contribution to the Church of England, especially his part in ecumenical matters. His wisdom and friendship will be greatly missed. Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with his wife Jo and their family.

As neighbouring Bishops in Ely and Peterborough, they worked together closely during the past decade. One of their notable achievements was to end a centuries-old anomaly in which a substantial part of Peterborough city fell within the jurisdiction of Ely Diocese. In 2004 they drew up an agreement to share the care and administration of parishes within the south Peterborough area. To symbolise this move Bishop Ian Cundy became an Assistant Bishop within the Ely Diocese.
