Tutorial: Magnetic Paper Dolls

What you’ll need: Pages of Betsey McCall paper dolls printed from here (I used a cotton paper that is slightly heavier than normal printer paper, but anything will do); adhesive magnet sheet(s) (I used one 1’x2’ sheet (purchased at Michael's), and was able to make over 50 pieces for my set); a small pair of crafting scissors; a small metal box (these dolls fit perfectly inside the boxes sold at Michael's that are intended to hold gift cards).

Step 1: Cut a rectangle around your doll (or outfit, or accessory, or whatever), cutting as close to the edge of the doll as possible without cutting into it (remember that you don’t need the tabs, so feel free to cut those off).

Step 2: Cut a rectangle of magnet the same size as the rectangle you’ve just cut around your doll (a simple way to measure – hold your doll rectangle up against the magnet sheet and cut around it).

Step 3: Peel the backing off of the adhesive magnet sheet and carefully press the doll onto the magnet. Work from one edge to avoid wrinkles.

Step 4: Cutting both the magnet and the paper together, trim the excess from around your doll. I found that these look best if you leave a small cushion of white around each piece (don’t worry about the lines from the tabs showing, they really aren’t noticeable).

Step 5: Repeat! Follow these four steps for all of the pieces you’d like to include in your dress-up doll set.

Step 6: Place your dolls and their possessions into a metal tin. For extra cuteness points, make a sweet label for the front:

If you like my label, you can find it here! Download the file at full size through the “All Sizes” tab. To fit the tins sold at Michaels, print the label at 2.75 x 4.25” onto adhesive-backed paper. Cut out and stick the label to the front of the tin. Adorable!

Enjoy your dolls!

This is adorable! My mother always talks about going to her Granny's house and cutting out Betsey McCall paper dolls. This would be a perfect gift for her, she'd really enjoy having these on her fridge. I'll be making these soon for her birthday. Thanks so much for the idea!

I wonder though...my niece is 8...I think half the fun of paper dolls is cutting them out....But cutting them out with the magnet sheet might be way too difficult for her?

What do you think? She is a really great cutter with scissors.

What a wonderful idea! Thank you so much for posting the tutorial, I've bookmarked it for future use as next year's Christmas gifts for the wee girls in my family. (Maybe even the big girls too.)

Yay - I'm so glad that you all like the paper dolls! They are super fun both to make and to play with.

Urban Woodswalker (I responded to you on Flickr as well, but I'll put it here in case anyone else is wondering) - if she is good with using sharp scissors, I think she will be fine! The magnet sheets are pretty soft and easy to cut through. Let us know how it goes!

Hi Alli,

Thanks for the great tutorial! The dolls are so sweet! I've started making some for some small friends of mine, but I've noticed that the clothes don't stick to the dolls very well. That is, both stick to metal, but if you try to stick magnetic clothes to magnetic doll without sticking both to a metal surface they don't hold well. Did you have this problem? I'm worried that it might be a little bit frustrating if the girls want to play with the dolls rather than just dressing them in the tin. Thanks for any thoughts!

Great idea - I linked to this on my weekly roundup. For a car trip last summer, my MIL found some "paper doll" print fabric and we made fabric/paper magnetic dolls for my toddler. If anybody is interested, you can go here (scroll down) to see how we did it. Short story is that we used a washer in the doll and a small magnet on the clothes. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for this terrific idea and tutorial. I made these today and they came out so cute! I'm embarrassed to say that I made them for myself. LOL! I used the dolls from the '50s. Outfits are gorgeous!

sukigirl said...

I just starting making them and I also found that the clothes won't stick to the doll.
This is such a cute idea, I wonder if there is a way around this problem?

Alli (One Pearl Button) said...

Hi Sukigirl - yes, the magnets won't stick to each other, only to metal. Packaging them in a tin is great because it makes them portable, or they are fun on a fridge or filing cabinet (or anything else made of metal).

Been trying to work this one out myself...

After e-mailing with the company, I think you can make a non-magnetic doll from this scissor cuttable "paper" that the magnetic clothes will stick to. I am so excited about it. Hope it helps you guys.

Thanks Ellen!
That looks like it might work, I'll have to check to see if our craft stores carry this.
I bet all you would need is a few of the 3x 5 so even if you ordered them online it would pretty much just be the price of shipping.

Thanks, Ellen - that looks perfect!

This is awesome!!! We are going to do this for our girl scout troop!

Lisa B. said...

I don't understand. If the magnets won't stick to each other, how do the clothes stay on the dolls?

Alli (One Pearl Button) said...

Hi Lisa,

Both the magnets and the clothes need to stick to another surface (a refrigerator, tin, or anything else magnetic). It's pretty typical for magnetic paper dolls. My nieces love playing with theirs on the fridge!

How wonderful! I have to make these for my girls.

I have some Aunt Lindy paper doll fabric and was wondering if you though I could use that on the magnet sheets?

Mhairi said...

These are fantastic. Do you know how long I have been searching for paper dolls like this. Now all I need is the other supplies (and a working printer) and I can go into major production for my little girl and her friend.
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!
