Frederick County Outdoor School
The Outdoor School of Frederick County, Maryland provides a quality learning experience for all fifth and sixth grade students in Frederick County Public Schools. Students seek to demonstrate an understanding of the integrated nature of science, mathematics, history, language and cultural arts as they investigate the value of our natural resources. They begin to develop positive attitudes, interests, problem-solving and decision-making skills concerning environmental issues and how they affect the individual. Connections between classroom learning and real life situations are made more meaningful as students collect, organize, interpret, and communicate data in a field setting.

This field study correlates with the FCPS fifth grade geology unit. The outdoor staff leads students on a 2 day geologic tour of many beautiful and interesting geological sites of Frederick County ranging from a local limestone quarry to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. Students also collect 12 different rock and mineral specimens to make their own Frederick County Rock and Mineral Collection. You may see photos of these samples by clicking on the "Rocks and Minerals" link on the left. Click here to enter the 5th grade program.   This field study of the different rivers and streams of Frederick County is a follow-up to the water unit taught in the sixth grade home school science class. Besides collecting water data the students also observe the great variety of plants and animals that are found in our wetlands and surrounding areas. They also discover the importance of wetlands to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. This page is designed to help the students prepare for this outdoor field experience. This will be directed by the home school teachers. Data collected will be posted under the title Stream Data. Students will then be able to access all of the data over the past 12 years to help them analyze the conditions of our local waterways. Click here to enter the 6th grade program.

The Outdoor School Program is aligned with the essential curriculum for science as a required experience for all FCPS 5th and 6th grade students. This program experience fulfills several MSDE requirements:
