PROUD TO BE A KIWI
Words & Music - Phil Garland

I came from Hawaiki far across the sea,
I sailed in the first canoe to reach this sanctuary.
I'm a warrior, a chieftain, the mighty Kauri tree,
The spirit of Tane is watching over me.
I'm a Cook - a British captain, who sailed the seven seas,
I'm Gisborne, where the world's first sunrise can be seen.
I'm a sealer and a whaler cast upon these shores,
I am the Fire-God speaking, when Ruapehu roars.
Chorus:-
I'm proud to be a Kiwi, standing strong and tall,
The spirit of our Nation unites us one and all.
Let's join hands together and sing in harmony,
Our land - New Zealand, means all the world to me.
I'm a settler and a pioneer, one of the pilgrim band,
I'm a farmer and a bushman, I helped to clear the land.
I am the snow-clad mountains, the mighty nor'west breeze,
I am the rugged valleys and the rivers running free.
I'm Gabriel Read - a miner, and I discovered gold,
I'm a shepherd - James McKenzie, whose exploits will be told.
I'm Richard Pearse - inventor, the first man yet to fly,
I'm an ANZAC at Gallipoli, whose memory never died.
Chorus...
I'm Slattery - The Shiner, my legend has begun,
I'm Hillary - a mountaineer, whose race is never run.
I'm an All Black and I wear the Silver Fern with pride,
I'm Footrot Flats, whose story is known far and wide.
I'm a woman and a mother, a companion and a wife,
I'm a child of the future, bringing dreams to life.
I'm a Poet and an Author writing stories fresh and bold,
I am the Nations Heritage, preserved for young and old.
Chorus....
NB:- "I'm a poet and an Author" refers to both James K Baxter and
Kathryn Mansfield. Logically their names didn't quite fit the metre
of the song. Depending on how the mood takes me, I have on occasions
replaced "A shepherd - James Mckenzie etc" with "I'm Jean Batten,
the first woman to fly around the world.
