Sheng Mao: A Famous Folk Painter |
Bian Jingzhao (边景昭) : courtesy name Wen Jin (文进), native of Shaxian, Fujian Province. In the Yongle Reign of the Ming Dynasty (1403-1424) his masterly skill earned him an official appointment by Emperor Chengzu. Affluence of the contemporary society and imperial might are reflected in the paintings done by this court-appointed painter. Standing on one leg to rest is a habit peculiar to wading fowl. This painting “Twin Cranes by Plum Blossoms in Snow” (雪梅双鹤图) depict a pair of cranes standing on one leg doubles the sense of peace and leisure. They are however not completely at rest. One is preening while the other cranes its neck with curiosity toward the budding white plum blossoms overhead. The snow on the twigs is denoted by blank with no application of white to make the cranes and the plum blossoms stand out in color. This is an example of the resourcefulness and versatility of the Chinese painting technique. source: The Art Book of Chinese Paintings, published by Long River Press |
