BROWN A. GARNET BROWN BUSINESSMAN, COMMUNITY ACTIVIST, POLITICIAN OF HALIFAX A leading business, community and political figure passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 7, 2010. Born in Halifax on May 22, 1930, he was the son of the late Garnet and Margaret (Reardon) Brown. With his father Garnet Brown Sr., he founded the brokerage firm A.G. Brown and Sons Limited and introduced the concept of selling with local marketing programs of source suppliers to retailers, food service operators and industrial users in Atlantic Canada. Under his direction, his firm successfully launched many brands in Atlantic Canada which led to the presentation of the Hall of Achievement Award from the Canadian Fo od Brokers Association, the highest honor give amongst his peers. He was a founding member of the Frank H. Sobey Fund of Excellence in Business Studies. Former Governor of Mount Saint Vincent University, past president of the Maritime and Canadian Food Brokers Association, he was a founding member of Halifax Cablevision Limited and Dartmouth Cable T.V.; past National Director of the Canadian Ro ads and Transportation Association; Past National Director from Nova Scotia for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program, recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, and member of the Sports Heritage Hall of Fame for his significant contribution to amateur sports. He was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Commerce (honoris causa) by Saint Mary's University for his dedication to his business interests, his political achievements and his community service. Garnet brought his same commitment from business to political life. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the province of Nova Scotia representing the Halifax Eastern Shore riding from 1969-1978. He served as a member of the executive council serving as Minister of Highway, Public Wo rks, To urism, Environment and Recreation. His efforts led to the creation of Sports Nova Scotia, Sports Heritage Hall of Fame, the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, and the Little Red School House Program. Paralleling the success achieved by Sports Nova Scotia, he led the way to form the Cultural Federations of Nova Scotia. In his youth, Garnet was one of the area's top athletes, excelling in three sports: basketball, football and probably best remembered as one of the best baseball catchers ever developed in this region. He was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers and played in their farm system for two years. Garnet was predeceased by his brothers, David and Donald. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty Lowe); sons, Robert (Marcia), James (Karla); daughters, Karen, Jacqueline (James Curleigh), Portland, Ore.); grandchildren, Chelsea, Harrison, Christopher, Tyler, Alexander, Scotia and Olivia; sister, Jacqueline Caithness, Edmonton, Alta. Garnet was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Parish, Halifax. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 11, between 37 p.m. in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Funeral mass will be held in St. Agnes Church, Mumford Road, Halifax on Tuesday, January 12, at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. Agnes Church, Victorian Order of Nurses in Garnet's name, and/or Saint Mary's University.
