July 27 - Shearer Joins Blackburn Rovers
2009-07-30 23:47:58

After making an immediate impact with Southampton, Alan Shearer made his first British record breaking move when he signed with Blackburn Rovers for of £3.6m on this day in soccer history in 1992.

The move came after Blackburn had won the playoff to be promoted to the newly formed English Premier League and Rovers millionaire owner Jack Walker was ready to splash the cash to make sure the Lancashire club’s stay in the top division was a long one.

Kenny Dalglish was the club’s new manager and Shearer was his main target.  And he made enough of an impression for Shearer to turn down Sir Alex Ferguson with an offer from Manchester United to sign with Blackburn.

The move paid off for Shearer and Blackburn as Rovers went on to edge out the Red Devils on the final day of the 1994/95 English Premier League campaign to win the silverware.  It was Shearer’s only piece of silver in his 17 year career and is the only Premier League title for any club outside of Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea.
