Coyotes defenceman suspended for hit on Islanders rookie John Tavares during Saturday game

NEW YORK The Canadian Press

Phoenix Coyotes defenceman Ed Jovanovski has been hit with a two-game suspension for his elbow hit on Islanders rookie John Tavares.

The league announced Monday Jovanovski's second two-game suspension in just over a month. He was suspended Dec. 9 for a forearm hit on Minnesota centre Andrew Ebbett.

That makes Jovanovski a repeat offender under the terms of the CAB. Accordingly, he forfeits US$158,536.59 in salary based on the number of games (82) in a season, rather than the number of days (193). The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Jovanovski delivered an elbow to Tavares' head area at 19:43 of the first period of Saturday's game against New York. He was assessed a major penalty for elbowing and a game misconduct.
