Home: MPEG Layer-3 Codec

WINDOWS 95/98, AND WINDOWS NT 4.0

The stand-alone codec for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0 users. Click on the link above to download the L3 Codec. Installation is very simple. Just double click on l3codecx.exe and follow the prompts.

Note: If you decide to install the new Microsoft Media Player version 5.2 at any time in the future, it will remove the MPEG Layer-3 codec from your system. If you still want your computer to recognize mp3 sounds as standard Wav sounds once Media Player has been installed, you'll need to reinstall the L3 Codec.

WINDOWS 3.1 or WINDOWS NT 3.51

Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51 users will not be able to use the stand-alone codec. You'll need to download Microsoft Netshow, which contains the appropriate codec necessary to play the compressed Wav files. Click on the above link to download NETSHOW 2.0

MACINTOSH

Download SoundApp 2.5.
Sound Manager 3.1 or better is required, but is no longer available for download. However, Sound Manager 3.2 is included as part of System 7.5.3, so the Sound Manager won't need to be installed if you're using 7.5.3 or later. QuickTime 2.5 and later also include a proper version of the Sound Manager. Please visit Sound America for more information.
