There are many voices in contemporary horror fiction today, but none as blunt as Vince Churchill. The “DEAD SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH” scribe is as subtle as a blunt instrument to the head, with a writing style straight out of a 70’s exploitation flick that is equal parts unflinching and daring in its portrayal of the horrors that humanity is capable of. The perfect example of this is Vince’s newest offering, “THE BUTCHER BRIDE”, which is a guaranteed guilty pleasure for those fans of the grindhouse era exploitation flicks. I had the opportunity to sit and talk to Vince about his work exclusively for Bloody-Disgusting.
Even though the sales for Mark Waid ("THE FLASH", "KINGDOM COME")and Emma Rios' ("HEXED") "STRANGE" have been less than impressive, the series itself continues to build itself fantastically and for those who haven't yet gotten a chance to introduce themselves to the world of "STRANGE" then you have missed out! Inside you'll find a preview of Marvel's last issue of the mini-series due for a February 10th release!
With the "ALIEN VS PREDATOR" video game on the horizon this month fans of the titular monster-on-monster franchise clash have enough to be excited for, and today we have even more news to wet your pallets with a 4 page preview of Dark Horse comics second issue of "ALIENS VS PREDATOR: THREE WORLD WAR". "Machiko Noguchi is the only human known to have lived among the extraterrestrial hunters known as Predators -- and she's had plenty of up-close-and-personal experience with another deadly, otherworldly life form, the xenomorph Aliens, hunting the beasts alongside her Predator hosts. Machiko thought those days were long past, but now a long-lost rival clan of warlike Predators has emerged, using specially bred Aliens as weapons, and both Predators and humans are threatened. Now, Machiko must again don her Predator armor and negotiate a possible alliance with the very same race that made trophies of humans for centuries. And when you "negotiate" with Predators, there will be blood!"
All week it seems like we have been getting news in on screenwriter/director Joe Harris' ("Screenwriter-"THE TRIPPER", "DARKNESS FALLS") newest genre offering "GHOST PROJEKT", which is set to make its debut from Oni Press on March 10th, being bumped back a week according to Joe Harris' official website. However, to appease those of you who are looking forward to this one Oni Press has given us access to the first 13 pages of issue #1 along with some original sketchs! Read on for the preview!
It has to feel good to be Seth Grahame-Smith. The "PRIDE PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES" scribes' horrific spin on Jane Austens' classic was a runaway bestseller, exceeding everyone in the genres expectations, has been picked up by Lionsgate for a major feature film adaptation starring Natalie Portman, and now it looks like it may also be adapted into a comic book. Elizabeth Bennet is one of England's most fearsome warriors, whose speed with a sword is only matched by her quick wit. But she faces her most formidable foe yet in the haughty, conceited, and yet strangely attractive person of Mr. Darcy...
In January we brought you a first look at Dark Horse comics new series "DEVIL", that is a collaborative effort with Japan based publishers Madhouse ("TRIGUN", "NINJA SCROLL"). Since then however the title has shifted dates from February 3rd, up to a February 17th release date, and news on the title has been scarce. However today a 6 page preview has surfaced, and if they are a telling example of what kind of a story we can expect to see, then you can consider me excited. Read on for the full preview.
Continuing our week of exclusive interviews with several of the industries' key names in horror, today we have the first installment of my 2 part interview with writer/producer Sammy Montana (Writer-"THE HAUNTED CAVES", Producer of the "HALLOWEEN" films)! Beyond the break you'll Sammy talks with us about his original graphic novel "THE HAUNTED CAVES", breaking into the industry, and his experience with comics personal and professional.
I know it's still very early on in the year, but with the announcements of so many new titles surfacing this past month, along with the news that AMC has green-lit a Frank Darabont directed "WALKING DEAD" pilot, I think it's safe to say that this is the biggest year in horror comics in recent memory. And as if the news of said pilot wasn't enough for literary gore-hounds everywhere, below you will find the preview of Image's newest horror mini-series "FADE TO BLACK". Read on for the skinny.
Earlier this week we brought you the conclusion of my interview with "GHOST PROJEKT" scribe Joe Harris, where he talked in depth about his newest series from Oni Comics. Well now Joe has given us a first look at the second issue in his new mini series due for release on April 21st!
"As U.S. Weapons Inspector Will Haley and his Russian counterpart Anya Romanova begin to uncover the truth behind the mysterious military project known only as 'Dosvidanya,' those most closely associated with the program keep turning up dead. Can this pair of sleuths get past their cultural differences before the body count rises even further, or is this just a prelude to the nightmare the Soviets planned for their enemies?"
I love re-releases of classic films, especially when they are ones that grossly needed it. IE-George A Romero's "DAY OF THE DEAD", which unlike its predecessor, "DAWN", which got a 4 disc sell-your-firstborn release, never has had such a comprehensive treatment. That's all changing though as Arrow is bringing us not only a 2 disc special edition to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the films release, but also bringing us an all new special edition comic book by the dream team of illustrator Jeff Zornow ("HALLOWEEN: THE FIRST DEATH OF LAURIE STRODE", Fright-Rags) and writers Barry Keating ("HACK/SLASH MEETS REANIMATOR") & Stefan Hutchinson ("HALLOWEEN NIGHTDANCE")! Read on for the full skinny!
This is good news for the "DEMONIC" faithful. Top Cow Comics is reporting that the first printings of Robert Kirkman's ("MARVEL ZOMBIES", "THE WALKING DEAD") "PILOT SEASON" has followed in the footsteps of its predecessor, "MURDERER", and sold out nationwide! After the initial success of "MURDERER" many were wondering if there was going to be a no contest, but it looks like Kirkman and Co have a monster on their hands. As we look to bring readers a slew of exclusive one-on-one interviews this week, we continue with the conclusion of my extensive interview with screenwriter and comic book scribe, Joe Harris. (The first segment can be found here) Inside you'll find info on his upcoming project from Oni Press, "GHOST PROJEKT", as well as his plans for the future. Read on for the skinny! ...Read More
With the recent announcement of Macs’ “IPad” there has been a lot of people wondering what this could mean for the future of literature in its pen and paper form, as the lament of the “E-Reader” seems to no longer be sequestered to just your local book store or Amazon. Recently I had the fortune of sitting down with the author of one of the champions of the e-book format, “JASON DARK” scribe Guido Henkel. Bloody-Disgusting talked exclusively with the author extensively about his new series, and about his thoughts on the so called “e-reader revolution”.
Rick Florina's "DOLOR" series has become something of a contained phenomina amongst the horror faithful, becoming one of the most talked about new series in recent memory. And for good reason, it kicks a##! So in anticipation of the upcoming release of Rick's second book in the "DOLOR" series, "CHRISSY", it has been announced that there will be an exclusive reading for the title on February 20th. For all you Dolor-Heads out there read on. "The first book tells the tale of Officer Caleb Taylor. Caleb is going through Hell. His daughter just drowned and his wife has disappeared without a trace. However, something begins to stir him from beyond the grave. It won't let him rest until he finds out the truth…"
Robert Kirkman's ("WALKING DEAD", "MARVEL ZOMBIES") newest installment into Top Cow's "PILOT SEASON" has been plagued with release date issues, being pushed back twice in the span of one month alone. It was getting so bad that it left readers wondering if the story was even going to happen at all, and if it did then the next question became whether or not it was going to be the comic equivalent of the forthcoming "WOLFMAN" remake and get pushed from this month entirely. But thankfully all is well, and for whatever creative or political reasoning that kept "DEMONIC" from readers hands for the past couple weeks, allow me to be the one to
assure you that it was not to ill effect. Read on for the full review.
The "Ghost Rider" franchise is something of an enigma. A loyal cult following (as well as a blasphemous film adaptation)have kept Johnny Blaze and co. from fading into comic book obscurity of the hellfire of fan backlash against the direction of a poorly developed film and a pending lawsuit against its publishers by its own creator. But like any good undead-spirit-o'-vengeance the rider blazes on in "GHOST RIDER: HEAVENS ON FIRE" as the arc draws itself to a close whilst also signaling the end of scribe Jason Aaron's ("PUNISHER", "THE AVENGERS") run draws to a screeching stop. Read on for the 7 page preview for the red-hot finale before it hits shelves February 3rd. (MSRP-$3.99)
Hot off the heels of our preview of Joe Hill’s newest masterpiece Bloody-Disgusting.com is teaming with Harper Collins Publishing to give away 5 free copies of “HORNS”, due to be released on February 16th! Beyond the break you’ll find all the details on how you can get your hands on a copy of one of this year’s most anticipated chillers!
When "HEART SHAPED BOX" was released in 2007 I was still working at my local Borders Books store swiftly reading myself through any and everything in our horror section. Being the fan of horror literature that I am, I could not help but notice the name Joe Hill (Son of literary mastermind, Stephen King) and in return decided to give his first effort a try. By the time I was done any and all thoughts of Joe Hill, the son of one of my favorite authors from childhood, were replaced by the realization that, quite frankly, the kid had chops. Now Joe is back and with him he brings hell in his newest novel "HORNS" due for a February 16th release date! Read on for the skinny.
If there is a remake that I am looking forward to this year (And yes, I have considered "A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET") then it has to be Darren Lynn Bousman's ("SAW 2-4", "REPO THE GENETIC OPERA")upcoming "MOTHER'S DAY". All of the press I have seen for it makes it look like it might not fall into "STEPFATHER" territory, and for that I think we can all be thankful. So when the news that Scott Milam, the writer of the screenplay for said film, was releasing a comic book series later this year fell into my inbox, of course I was interested. Read on for the details of Arcana's newest foray into "The Not Robocop But Totally Robocop" genre in "KILLING MACHINE".
My beginnings of watching the CW's cult hit "SUPERNATURAL" is very bittersweet, but since Wildstorms' newest arc in the comic book spinoff is tagged with 'Beginnings End' I figure now would be a good time to shamelessly tell the story. I was at home sick for 3 days with a particularly nasty case of the flu (this was back before it was being tagged with 'bird', 'swine', or any other animal names. If it had to have one though let's go with the 'moose' flu) and I was on my 3rd day of sleeping in. I was in the middle of a very shocking episode of Maury when an ad for the pilot episode came on. I recognized Ackles from the campy, but entertaining 'DEVOUR', and so I figured "why not?". Little did I know that that one 30 second TV spot would start a 5 year obsession with one of, in my humble opinion, TVs best chiller series ever.
