Police have issued an urgent appeal after a three-year-old boy was abducted by a man in Belmont North near Newcastle.

A 36-year-old man allegedly grabbed the toddler from his home after threatening the boy's mother just after midday.

The man, who is possibly armed, is described as being of European appearance, 180 centimetres tall, with a medium build, brown eyes and light brown hair.

He was last seen driving a white four-wheel-drive utility north along the Pacific Highway towards the Lake Macquarie suburb of Charlestown.

The boy is described as having brown eyes and short dark brown hair. He was wearing blue denim shorts and a green T-shirt.

Anyone who sees the pair is urged not to approach them but instead dial 000 and contact police.
